unfortunately the product broke the first time I used it to make cranberry sauce- it snapped right in half at the blade, but the company was nice enough to refund my money. It also was hard to keep on the counter and leaked cranberry sauce all over the counter and floor as I tried to grind the cranberries.

Good quality product - sturdy. The mounting screw/clamp doesn't hold tight to the counter. Otherwise, it works quite well.

I didn't buy this here. I inherited it from my mother. I can recall helping to crank this grinder when I was a child. We used it to grind meat and also to make bread stuffing. It had its problems, but it outlasted our KitchenAid meat grinder attachment, which eventually burned out the KitchenAid. The metal body of my Universal Meat Grinder is weathered, the handle is darkened with age, and the blade is rusty, but it will work again if I ever need it.

However, in the meantime I am using an electric meat grinder and I advise you to do the same unless you have children who will turn the crank for you, and plenty of time yourself to unjam it when sinews get wrapped around the innards of the grinder.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. For years, my mother used a universal model #2 grinder for a number of purposes, the main one that I remember being to grind chocolate bits to make chocolate chip cake. As I started to cook more of the recipes I loved from my youth, I asked for one of these and received a slightly updated version (compared to her 30+ year old model).
Sadly, the updated version, for some reason, simply fails to grind chocolate bits. It becomes harder and harder to turn the handle until the end is entirely jammed and it stops working.
There are some seemingly minor engineering differences between the old and the new. The screw portion on the new has thicker bands and comes to a smooth end (the old version actually comes to a hard stop, the far end where the food comes out of the groove is squared off). A couple of the fittings are also slightly different, but not functionally so.
I've tried a couple other items in the grinder, and it seems to work barely tolerably, but the jamming problem seems to be a regular thing with anything cohesive: not bad with carrots or similar, meat comes through okay, but anything a little sticky seems to be problematic.

I've tried food processors and a simple rolling pin to get the chocolate bits right for the recipe, but nothing works quite as well as my mom's grinder. I wish mine worked as well as hers.
