Dissolves Carbon DepositsJul 18, 2010
By Chad A. Hasselius This stuff is cheap and it is good at dissolving carbon deposits. What is in it? 99% of it is two types of paint thinner: heavy naptha and stoddard solvent. <1% of it is ortho-dichlorobenzene. Though the dichlorobenzene is a very good carbon/sludge dissolver, they don't use very much of it because it is expensive and the chlorine atoms make hydrochloric acid in your engine. This in itself isn't an issue because all API approved motor oils contain a high amount of calcium-based detergents which neutralize the acid. It will shorten the lifespan of your oil though.
The product has been around a long time and has been very successful. The only trouble with it is the way it is marketed. It comes off as snake oil. This isn't the case. The product works, but with some caveats. It thins out your oil a little bit. A whole quart of it will thin your oil a whole grade (5W30 becomes 5W20). Also, it's not a very good lubricator so you only want to use it occasionally. Using it every oil change will definately increase wear and tear. You probably don't want to put it in a truck while you plan to do some heavy towing with it. And if you have a lot of sludge use it with caution. You don't want to use too much too fast and get chunks of sludge floating around in the oil lodging into worse places than it was before. Don't get it on your hands because it will absorb in your skin.
Kano Labs makes a similar but stronger product called Kreen. Amsoil and Gunk also make solvent-type oil additive products that are intended to be 5-20 minute flushes you add to the oil just before changing the oil out. Marvel Mystery Oil is the most popular product of it's type though.

Best all around oil ever made!Mar 09, 2005

This stuff works better then most of the fuel system cleaners on the market today. It will also work as an oil system cleaner, assembly lube, and general maintenance lubricant. Marvel's mystery oil also makes an air tool oil which works equally as well. This is an old tried & true product. Very good buy!

Amazing since 1923Dec 11, 2010

Gasoline engines today may be better equipped to handle the ethanol (corn fuel) that is being added to our nations fuel, the only thing that is negative about the new fuels is that when it sets for any extended period the fuel turns into a varnishy tar and will ruin an engine, be it a new car or older car. These fuels also cause a buildup of varnish over time in critical engine components. Ta Da, Marvel Mystery Oil to the resucue! This fine mysterious liquid was once made by the Marvel Oil company and was invented by it's owner. Because of it's amazing ability to lubricate an engine and fuel system it is still being produced. Add Marvel Mystery Oil to every tank full. You only need add about four ounces to every ten gallons. You will notice your engine running smoother. Some say that it will increase the power of your engine. I don't agree with that. I think what really happens is that the Mystery Oil causes the engine to run so much smoother that it feels like you have more power. It only restores the engine to the power it is suppose to have. Do yourself a favor and get some of this for your engine, be it a car or an airplane, Marvel Mystery Oil works!

No Mystery In The Teardown...NISSANApr 15, 2011

My son has a 2003 NISASAN 350Z Touring Edition. Volunteered is engine for a special program from Nismo in Japan. He gave them his engine with approx 65000 miles on it for them to take apart and analyze, (One of four from the US), he got a new engine for free for his participation. After several weeks he gets a communication from NISSAN wanting to know what he has been doing to his engine, it was amazingly clean, free of carbon, and in their words looked nearly new. Hands down the best looking motor in the program. The answer? DAD, yep the old man told him from when the car was new to use synthetic oil and add a quart of ATF at each oil change. ATF has a great deal of detergent in it that works gently as you drive your car and a mild lubricant as well that is fully compatible with any oil. So, what does that have to do with MMO, simple; #1 ATF after about a month will dissipate and leave the engine about a quart low on oil. Just add a quart of synthetic oil and your good to go. However, #2 MMO has a great deal of detergent in it as well and yet does not dissipate, results, longer lasting cleaning effect, and no need to add oil later, and a much better lubricant than ATF. Second testimonial...DADs' truck..2001 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado, 5.3L. Did the ATF since it was born, however, over the last year and change I have been using MMO instead of ATF. I can tell you that the results have been remarkable, the engine feels constantly smooth, you know how your engine feels right after an oil change, then after a while it seems to have a slight grinding feel around when it's time to change the oil? That's gone with the MMO, always feels great, and this engine really has awakened. I also put a quart in the gas tank every other tank full. I can state with great pleasure that this truck runs like a top, has great response and halls ass. It ran great before don't get me wrong, I have always used either Amoco or Chevron gas and fully believed in Techron as an additive a few times a year, but stopped using that when I shifted to MMO, I can tell a huge difference and I think it has mostly to do with the cleaning AND lubrication results of it. I am a very satisfied customer. But again, the real proof was in the remarks of amazement from Nismo, they convinced me it was the real deal. (Note: The use of a quart in a 30 gallon tank of gas, MMO recommends 12fl oz., However, it is not the case of too much of a good thing, after all, it is a great lubricant for all the fuel system components including the fuel pump, does not burn seals, rings, pistons, or those tiny injector ports, contrary to some it does not contain kerosene which will adversely affect those components. Read up on the history of its' use in sewing machines during WWI. One very interesting story of its origins. It gets a solid ten in my book.
No Snake Oil HereNov 08, 2011

I've been use MMO for quite a few years and am a firm believer in it. While we don't have enough time for me to write (and for you to read) all the stories I could tell about MMO, I will say that it has saved me a bundle on PMs. What sold me on MMO was when I was in my teens my boss had an old Craftsmen lawnmower that burned oil and would foul the plugs within about 5-6 hours of running. He added MMO to the gas and the plugs would NEVER foul so long as the MMO was in the gas (2oz to 5g of gas). I couldn't believe it was the MMO, so I ran a tank of gas with no MMO, and you guessed it, fouled plugs. After spending a 1/2 hour cleaning both plugs, I ran the next tank with MMO and no more fouling. Recently my work truck started making a "pinging" noise from the engine while it was at idle. Sounded like a lifter, but I wasn't sure. I was about to take it to the shop when I decided to try some MMO in the fuel. I added 16oz to 25g of 93 octane gas and now the pinging is gone. I also use MMO in my Lycoming O-320 (aviation engine) fuel which keeps the cylinders, plugs and valves bright and shiny. Also keeps the plugs from fouling from the heavily leaded 100LL avgas. My A&P mechanic swears by MMO, and after using it for over a decade, so do I.
