4good design, but handle could be more comfortableSep 21, 2007
By James Ralston
I bought this food mill because it's the same design as the food mill my grandmother has had for decades. I've been using it the past few weeks to make tomato gazpacho. This food mill is more than up to the task.

The stainless steel surface is easy to keep clean, and it disassembles for even easier cleaning. As a nice touch, the diameter of the scraper wire on the bottom of the mill is just a fraction smaller than the grill holes, which means that if you have seeds lodged in any of the holes after cleaning, you can use the scraper wire to knock them out.

The only reason why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the double-loop handle can be uncomfortable to hold after a while. (I can understand why they used the double-loop design--because it stays cooler if you're milling over a heated pot--but I think I would've preferred having a more comfortable handle and using a potholder if necessary.)

4Foleys food millFeb 01, 2009

I had one about 30 years ago and just loved it for making applesauce. Unfortunately I lost it a few years ago and had to get another one. These are very hard to find but are one of the best of their kind on the market. You do have to remember, though to grind clockwise, then reverse every 5 or 6 times. Also about every 15 minutes or so, you need to empty it, turn it over and tighten the nut on the bottom as it works its way loose at times. Overall it's a very good product.

1Just not tough enough.Nov 25, 2008
By Susan Costello Gray
I bought this about a year and a half ago. I make blackberry jam and needed it to puree the berries and get some of the seeds out. It never did a very good job. It didn't put enough pressure on the fruit so I ended up with a good deal of waste. The second summer I used it the handle fell off (poorly soldered). Then the knob on top came off and I couldn't get it back on so ended up pitching the whole thing. It might be up to wimpy stuff like applesauce, but if you are a serious canner, find something stronger.

1they don't make them like they used toOct 22, 2007

I got one of these because it's what my mother and grandmother used to make applesauce. Boy was I disappointed! It didn't make it through one day of applesauce! After the 44th quart, the bottom that holds the spring on broke, and the lips on the edge that fit over the pan are bent so they are almost horizontal. And it didn't perform well up to the 44th quart either! It's a lousy construction that does not efficiently push the food through, leading to extra grinding, and extra force, which takes extra time. If I could get my money back, I would. My mom then gave me her ancient one, and what a difference! I'm able to grind a batch of applesauce in twice the time! They don't make them like they used to.

5food millFeb 06, 2007

I had been looking for a food mill for quite some time now. I even purchased one at Bed, Bath & Beyond. It couldn't do the processing at all.

So when I saw this food mill, which is like the one my mother used, I knew it would be just what I was looking for- And it was!
