Swing-A-Way Magnetic Wall Can Opener This is the can opener of my childhood. I am 64 and I was thrilled to find this product for sale. It is by far the easiest can opener, manual or electric, for people with any issues of strength or dexterity. I have arthritis and this can opener is truly effortless. It is easy for children to operate. Cleaning is simple since the can opener easily lifts off its base.

I've owned a yellow Amco Swing-A-Way can opener since 1971. After 38 years of opening thousands of cans, it was time for a replacement.

Oh, not because it wore out, but because we remodeled the kitchen and replaced it with a white one. The new white one from Amazon, now residing in our kitchen, is just as good and assembled as well as my older model, which was a pleasant surprise.

Far too often these days when anyone, replacing a known brand of product, does so because of past experience, they are often disappointed by the "new and improved" product that is made of cheaper materials and assembled by unskilled labor. Not so on this one.

Its funny in a way that both of my Amco can openers will become family heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation.

Update December, 2011...

I just had to add, so others would not think that I lied, that the wall, or cabinet mounted Amco can opener that I had purchased from Amazon was made in the USA, more than likely one of the very last few manufactured here.

I state this fact simply because last month I ordered the hand held Amco can opener in white from Amazon, and what I received was a piece of junk of a quality found in Dollar Stores for $1.00.

This company no longer produces quality can openers, and they are now less than 1/4 the same quality of workmanship and material that I received when I bought this cabinet mounted Amco can opener. I would have given my newest Amco purchase NO Stars, but Amazon doesn't allow a rating that low.

Truly a classic, and works like a charm. Why bother with another unreliable, counter-hogging electric appliance like an electric can opener when you can have this silent piece of perfection?

Opens can tops like they were made of butter. Seriously, this is the best thing in my kitchen...

This (Chinese-made) Amco wall can opener is inferior in every way to the hand-held (USA-made)version that I have had for years and still use to this day.

The metal the body is made of is thin.

It is impossible to engage the cutting wheel without tipping the can to place it under the cutter. So if the can has any liquid in it, like soup, it makes a huge mess.

Also, because of the thin metal of the body, the opener fits very loosely inside the slot on the bracket and constantly pops out, which requires one hand to hold the can and the other to do double duty - turning the handle and holding the opener in the slot.

What an annoying waste of money.

After decades of use we needed to replace our swing-a-way can opener. We did not have the extra counter space needed for an electric can opener. I searched chain stores like Bed-Bath-and Beyond, Linens and Things etc for this simple but effective mechanical can-opener before finding it at Amazon.com. I bought an extra one to give away. An excellent product.
