5Excellent Combination SquareOct 22, 2009

For the price of this combination square it really is a steal. The rule part of the square is made of stainless steel and has easily readable black letters that have been etched into the face of the rule so it won't scratch off. It has a plethora of measurements including 1/8ths inch, 1/16ths, and 1/32nds as well as centimeters. The zinc body snugly houses the level and has a brass cap covering where it was (presumably glued) into place, and it provides decently accurate readings. The scribe has a brass threaded end to keep it from sliding out (a problem I've had with other low cost combination squares). Most importantly of all, the square is just that, SQUARE. I've had several issues with low cost combination squares being off by as much as 1/8th of an inch per foot, but this one is perfectly square. For the price of this combination square I would say it's one of the best on the market.

I am always looking for a quality tool at a bargin price. Try any other square under $20 and you can hardly move it. The Swanson adjust easily. It is also square. Many in this price range are not.

Solidly-built and indeed "square" as the prior reviewer stated. I snugged it up to a high quality Carpenter's Square and verified this. This tool helps you draw accurate straight or 45° cut lines on the material you're working with. I discovered that the little plastic one of these that I had been using for years comes close but is NOT truly square.

.. and I stepped on it with my foot and it sank in about 3/4 of an inch--OUCH! I didn't even know that was there.. I threw the stupid nail screw away after that.

This square by Swanson (TC132) is good value for the cost. The blade is easy to read, etched nicely, and has multiple measurements. It required no correction for squareness - came properly square. However, the spring-loaded bolt that grips the blade is poorly made and easy to break, with the tip fracturing under use and unable to grip the blade. Time to buy a new square but will look for another manufacturer that does a better job of designing a bolt to secure the blade.
