Holds up to use.Nov 11, 2010

I've tried a number of retractable key caddies in the past few years and most of them are junk. They're too weak, or they break, or they fall off my belt or whatever. The Starrett holds up. You can load a bunch of keys on it and it won't droop. Over time, two issues come up. First, the belt clip loosens. If you're handy you can take the thing apart, use a pair of pliers to rebend the clip back into form, then reassemble it. It can be a little tricky to rewind the chain about the spring mechanism, but once you figure out how to coordinate your hands, it's not that hard. This is also a nice feature if you load SO many keys on the thing that it does actually droop. You can just take it apart, wind the spring a few turns tighter, and reassemble. Second, the little links at the end of the chain break from time to time. I've never lost my keys because of this, thankfully. I always get some warning because when one of the bits of metal in the terminal link breaks, it leaves a sharp protrusion that jabs me in the finger every time I reach down to get my keys. Here again you just take the caddy apart, use a pair of pliers or whatever to remove the broken terminal link, rethread the keyring on the new terminal link, and reassemble.

I had a much more expensive (made in the far East) retractable key chain I bought locally - it broke in about two months - used a plastic coated cable and the cable broke. This is RUGGED! The spring is strong and the clip holds it to your belt very tight. I bought three and it cost me about the same for all three as I paid for the hardware store broken one. I figure I have chains for the next five years or more now - these are really well made.

I use this key caddy for my ID and swipe card which is used many times throughout each day at work. The last one held up for several years before the grommet around the hole the chain passes through wore out which caused the chain to drag and stick, the mechanism was still functioning when I replaced it. I wouldn't buy any other brand.

Tried cheaper key caddies. They lasted maybe 2 months before the wire breaks. This caddy is heavy duty and I am confident that I won't be replacing it in two months. Can handle a good number of keys as well.

Ordered three and found one broken in the package. Item is built weaker than original purchased back in 2003.
