4Yes it's good, especially for beginners, but not the bestAug 16, 2010

This is a good scraper from a venerable company that understands and forges their own tool-steel for some tools. However, the steel in these scrapers is NOT made in Germany. It is imported from Asia, then flattened, annealed, cut and hardened in Germany.

The "prepared edges" might fool some into thinking it is a superior tool, simply because it requires a little less dressing and burnishing at first. That "extra" manufacturing-step only takes less than a second, but it adds to the cost.

I prefer the slightly less expensive Bahco scrapers. Like most new scrapers, they require complete dressing and burnishing.
The micro-grain structure of Bahco steel is finer, and therefore takes a keener edge, though such subtleties are not noticeable to everyone.

Card-scrapers are so simple, so cheap, so useful and so easy-to-use, it almost doesn't matter which one you get. So long as the steel is just-the-right hardness and of adequate fineness, it will work.

These Two Cherries scrapers are very good, but you can do slightly better with the Bahco for slightly less.

You need a flat file to prepare the edges.
A diamond stone works best for smoothing the sides.
You will also need some kind of burnisher.
You can buy a fancy / expensive burnisher if you want to, but I get the best results with an old carbide router bit, chucked into a drill or stuck into a chunk of hardwood.

With any decent scraper and the right sharpening, dressing, burnishing tools, you can get gorgeously flat / smooth surfaces even on the most difficult gnarly woods. It's FAST, easy and DRAMATICALLY reduces the amount of sanding dust during finishing.

Although the cost is very low for these simple tools, it makes sense to get a less expensive brand. Why? Because you want to have several of them.
The card-scraper's cutting-edge is microscopic, so it will not last. Even if you sharpen it before you put it away and then do not use it for a day or two, the tiny burr will deteriorate from rust. So you have to sharpen and burnish these every time you use them, just before use. The easiest method is to do two or three at once so you always have a fresh edge. Also, these things get HOT when you scrape, so it's nice to put down the hot one and pick up a cool one every minute or so.

the savings and increased performance of the Bahco / Sndvik might not be appreciated until you try this process a few times. Then you'll see why you need more than one and that the economy grows with multiple purchases.

5Love itSep 09, 2008

This is my first scraper and I fell in love with it right away. I found some youtube vids that go over sharpening and even though this one comes sharp you will want to sharpen it after use.

Scraping is a much more enjoyable process than sanding. There is much less dust and a much higher degree of satisfaction and control. I wish someone would have introduced me to scapers years ago.

5Very Nice!Sep 24, 2007

I've not used a cabinet scraper before, but was very impressed with how this worked. I specifically purchased this one because it came with prepared edges and did not need sharpening - which according to some internet sites could take 30 minutes or more, assuming you have the right sharpening tools.

I used this scraper on a butcher block and it immediately created a glassy smooth finish; the only other smoothing the block had received was with a 40-grit sandpaper on a power sander.

A very pleasant suprise to use this.

5Great ScraperMar 21, 2008

What can I say? This scraper works really well. It stays sharper and the edge lasts longer than the cheaper varieties. I use it with the Two Cherries burnisher.

5High quality scraper, very useful.Feb 17, 2012

This is a very valuable addition to my tool kit. The Two Cherries scraper is a quality tool, honed exactly right, and designed for years of use. It is the perfect in-between tool, to be used after the last plane adjustment before turning to sandpaper. After smoothing the hardwood edge facing applied to plywood bookshelves, the resulting joint became almost invisible. Highly recommended.
