2Too much peat to use for Cacti & SucculentsApr 24, 2009
By Gardener Paul
I bought this along with a bag of regular Scotts' Potting Mix. I was quite disappointed to see that it hardly looks any different than plain potting soil and that its chief ingredient is still peat. It says it contains "organic materials, sand, and perlite" that promote drainage, but I was really hoping for something closer to 50% sand and perlite, and the organics will break down eventually reducing drainage. I'm giving 2 stars because although its not pure peat, its just not the Cactus specific soil I was hoping for. I have an Aloinopsis schooneesii in it, too. I'll let you know how it does.

I feel this potting soil is poorly formulated for such a specific group of plants. You may read "Made of a mix of sand and Perlite organic material", but I'd strongly recommend further supplementing this soil with sand or fine rock if you choose to use it with your Cacti.

3THIS STUFF IS OKAY AS A START BUT REQUIRES A LOT OF MODIFICATIONS TO BE EFFECTIVE.Jan 15, 2012
By D. Blankenship
One of the few plants I keep in my home that I am unable to almost instantly kill off cactus. This is followed closely by succulents, but cacti are my first choice. I sort of collect the things as they rather fit my personality perfectly.

I am constantly making small cactus gardens; keeping some, and giving others to friends. The mix being reviewed here is my mix of choice. BUT....and there is a big BUTT...I need to tell you that this potting soil and this soil alone is simply not enough nor is it adequate! I am not sure why, but the mix ratio here is simply unacceptable and it requires some modification to work correctly. I use this stuff because I have to start somewhere and this soil is as good as any for that purpose.

Depending upon the area you live, what your home conditions are and how much time you spend upon plant maintenance, you will need to do a bit of mixing for this stuff to be effective and to give ;you plant at least a running start.

First, there is simply not enough sand in this mixture. In my own circumstances I have found that if I mix about ¾ cup of sand and a pinch of regular soil from my garden with this mix then all works out quite well. For my succulents I use a bit less sand but a bit more regular dirt from my garden. (Actually, if you can find a good old rotten stump (not walnut for goodness sakes...oak is best), mixing that in lieu of the garden soil works best as long as you do not over do it. If you use the rotten stump stuff though, it is best to up the amount of sand you add to the mixture.

You want very good drainage with cactus and if you don't have that you will kill the things off pretty quick. Most cactus and succulent are lost simply because of wet roots and over watering. These plants are health little beggars and will last for years if you treat them right. I suggest you do some experiments yourself and adjust to your particular situation and other growing conditions.

I am giving this mixture three stars simply because it works quite well as a starting point and I have had great luck with it....as long as I don't use is straight - as is. This could be a good mix but the company seems to want to make a flavor that will cover multiple situations...which is something I should think would be almost impossible and if it were, would cost you an arm and a leg.

1Surprise!May 16, 2012

Though it was fun finding a small toad bouncing against the inside of my new bag of soil that does not make good first impression. I got my bag from a large orange home improvement empire and I'm sure if I ordered it through amazon my toad would have been dead, amazon goods in my experience are dated and I will not be renewing my "prime" because of that fact. The soil also sprouted a couple succulent weeds that I am letting grow to find out what they are. None of my Opuntia H sprouted due to the seed supplier or the soil I don't know. Overall this soil gets a 1 star rating because there are many better options my favorite being the jiffy organic starter.

P.S. I gave the toad a drink and let him go outside with all my best wishes.

4Seems To Be Working GoodNov 27, 2011
By S. Taylor "Goldenmom"
This is my second back of this soil. I love succulent plants and had a few that really grew over the summer from being outside. I needed to replant them and of course needed more soil. I used a whole bag of this and needed a second one. Once indoors, they still look great. I think the soil and fertilizer in it will keep them looking good until next summer when they can go outside again.

5My Lychee seed blossomed with this!Sep 24, 2009
By Kt
I did a lot of research to find a good potting soil that would support my Lychee plant that I am growing from a seedling.

I got it from a Lychee fruit that a girl brought in from work. As i've never had a Lychee fruit before, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was very tasty and a really neat looking seed was inside, and I decided to see if I could grow it. I looked up the plant online and saw that the plant itself was aesthetically appealing.

I sprouted it with the plastic baggie method, and then transplanted it into a pot with this soil. I read that Lychee likes soil with a high PH or Acid content, as this soil claimed to have.

I kept it in the shade and wow- just a week or two later it was growing upwards as a little stem! I have since been watering it once the soil is dry and moved it to a window with indirect sunlight.

The plant is doing great! The leaves are super green with no black edges, and it looks really healthy. Right now it has five big leaves and it's growing more. I have not even been fertilizing it or anything. I even missed watering it a few times and the plant still looks great. This soil was perfect and I give it an A+ to grow a Lychee seedling.
