A great safety additionApr 13, 2009

This product is a nice add-on for those wanting better visibility at night. I painted a few plastic parts on my SUV, and the paint is hard to see during the day. At night, it is quite reflective. It is not quite as reflective as high quality retroreflective tape, but it is still quite good. I found that applying about 4 coats, then applying 3 clearcoat spraypaint layers, works well.

One thing I would like to mention: The other review of this product gave it only 3 stars, complaining that it only reflects light back in the direct of the light source (such as back towards an approaching car). THAT IS WHAT THE WORD "RETROREFLECTIVE" MEANS! It is also a good thing, as sending light back at the light source is how retroreflective products do their job of making the painted item stand out when hit by car headlight. Scattering the light in all directions is what ordinary (non-retroreflective) objects do, which is why they don't stand out at night. It boggles the mind that the other reviewer would rate a product lower for doing exactly what it is designed and advertised to do.

This paint does what it advertises! Some of the reviewers seem to have believed that this paint would be self luminescent like a flashlight, glowing day and night. This paint only REFLECTS light back to the source of the light, and it does this VERY well - especially considering the price. I painted grill inserts for my Jeep, expecting so-so results, perhaps nothing due to the reviews. But for the price, I decided to try it anyways. Well, this is the coolest looking paint I have ever seen, almost mesmerizing when it reflects the light back, nearly invisible in the day.

Update July 30th, 2010 - I have since sprayed this paint on my rocker guards and the effect is great. Draws attention, period. The reflecting is bright enough to draw comments from strangers, and although it is going to take a few more coats to make the reflection of light uniform - that is ok. The entire purpose of this paint is to draw attention. I feel better now driving through intersections with a car without doors when I know that everyone who is remotely paying attention will see a bright white bar under my car. Great nightime safety addition that looks good in the day as well.

As a note - the instructions really need to be followed EXACTLY. I painted my rocker guards with two cans, and the can held at an angle. Worked okay. Then patched up a part that I sanded down while holding the can vertical - no comparison. Repainted both sides with one can while following the instructions exactly (duh) and it is much more reflective.

Trail marker, was pleasantly surprisedSep 21, 2010

This product works as an over spray on existing painted trail blazes. With a small head lamp, I can see the next blaze 50 feet away and at 10 feet it disappears. This is in a New England forest, not above tree line. It has been up a year and is still visible.

The hiking trails behind my house were initially marked with some kind of heavily applied spray paint, a free form foot long (or so) mark, directly on tree bark. After 10 years most of these blue, white, yellow, orange marks were starting to disappear (thank goodness). Volunteers re-blazed the trail with a 3x6 inch stencil with some sort of marking spray product.

I work late several nights a week and hike the trails year round at night. I received permission and marked the trails with some reflective thumbtacks and then "fire tacks". I like the brown stealth because they are hard to see in the daytime. The owner of the local hardware store suggested I try this reflective spray product. I bought a can, cut a 2 x 3 stencil out of a cereal box and over sprayed the existing blazes. It works for me.

At night, it does not visually pop like a fire tack or a reflective thumbtack. The first impression is that you are seeing a white painted blaze. It does not matter what the undercoat color is, the reflection is a white sort ghost like image. As you approach the blaze, the reflective image goes away and is replaced by the "normal" blaze. It is impossible to see the reflective over spray on bark in the daylight. You can see it on a flat painted piece of wood if you look closely.

For me it is not hiking a trial I know with a full moon in the Fall that I want to see the blazes. It is when it is snowning and the trail has "disappeared". However, these blazes have to be reassuring to a family with kids that has a light and stayed out on the trail longer than they should.

We will see how long these over spray blazes last.

This is great stuff; however like most things, for the best result you will need to follow the directions. I have used it for several years to highlight an elevated sculpture that I have sitting near the edge of my driveway. The sculpture is in that specific location to protect a drain that is "beneath" it and to keep people aware of where the pavement ends. I freshen the reflective paint every couple of years so it stays bright. It is a great alternative to some neon monstrosity guarding the grass and drain. As for other uses, I put it on my spouse's concrete alligator that is "hidden" along a back walkway - in dimmer path light the reflectivity lends a nice "wet appearance" to the alligator face and back.

I bought this product to reflect light on an ornamental snowmobile on top of my mailbox which is also equipped with reflective vinyl street numbers. The numbers work very well (they are red).....maybe too well if you also expect to see the red ornament on top. The glass beads do reflect the white light from headlights and does make the snowmobile visible, but not significantly so compared to the numbers. I'd describe it as a "dull" white reflection, visible but not striking.

The reflective coating went on easily, did not change the underlying color of the ornament and did what it said it would. Perhaps my expectations of a bright reflective surface (like that of a bike reflector) were unrealistic.
