3Learning experienceDec 14, 2011
By Kristian
I'm writing this so that others can avoid my mistakes. First of all, if you can do without the decorative flakes, do so. They are not magical, and my lack of foresight did not account for the possibility of them not resting completely flat and chipping (and bringing up some epoxy with them) when a hard object slides across the floor. They provide texture, and I am not sure that they will last long if you do things like slide chairs and the like against the floor. For instance, there was a small piece of plaster that was stuck in the epoxy - when I tried to remove it, quite a bit of epoxy came up with it. I used some leftovers to touch it up, and I've got my fingers crossed (I think the instructions say that the epoxy must be used within 16 hours of mixing). Another thing - APPLY THE EPOXY LIGHTLY. DO NOT try to give it a good, thick coat like you would with paint. My floor has roller streaks (and no, I did not use a dirt-cheap roller) on spots that were painted more heavily. One person noted that they had trouble removing masking tape (the epoxy would come up along with the tape). This was not a big problem with me, but it DID happen around a door threshold. I could have tried removing it more slowly to avoid this; but it came off so easily and without any problems from the walls, that I didn't take extra precaution when removing it from the thresholds. Finally, the product has a VERY strong smell after it's dried. I will probably have to leave the basement window open during the day (it's winter now) for a few days to reduce the smell. I don't know what someone would do if they didn't have access to a window!

The product dries pretty fast, so work quickly when sprinkling the flakes (if you use them). I would not use the flakes in hindsight. You might be better off getting artsy and finding some kind of stamp that you could use with paint (if such a product exists) and go over the floor afterward with a decoration that way. Since the product dries fast, when you roll it down it will look like it needs another once-over with the roller. Try to avoid doing this, or you will end up with streaks like me.

I must say that the floor looks a helluva lot better than it used to. But I used this in a rental house (and it's not the Biltmore Estate or the Taj Mahal), so I wasn't that picky (but I hope when I eventually sell the house...if this economy ever turns around...that potential buyers are also not too picky).

Another thing, don't be stingy with the flakes if you decide to use them. I bought two kits to cover ~320 - 350 square feet, and I had > 1.5 bags of flakes left over (in other words, I only used less than 1/2 of a bag of flakes). You might think that you will run out because the bag is not that big, but trust me, you will have more than enough flakes.

You might have a different experience. I am not the authority on basement floor epoxy. I am simply writing this to let you know how it went for me.

5Works Great!!!Mar 08, 2010
By M. Wilson
I put this on our basement floor. First I filled in any cracks and holes with concrete patch. Then we swept and vacuumed and then washed the floor well with TSP. When the floor had dried I applied the epoxy. I was very hesitant at first, worried that it would not come out looking good, or that I would run out before I finished (area being treated was ~ 200 sq ft). However, it rolled on very easy and spread well. I painted along the edges with a brush first, and then used an epoxy-rated roller with 1/4" nap). It looks FANTASTIC with the flakes. Had ~ 1/4 can left when finished. I would use this product again in a heatbeat.

4Verify how many kits you need and be sure to mix pain colors BEFORE applicationJul 13, 2010
By Red Soxy
Overall, my basement floor looks better, but I am not 100% satisfied. I ended up needing a second kit. I bought the same color, thinking that it would match and it did not. I googled my issue and found that others have had this problem. No where in the box, the directions, or on the instructional DVD do they mention to mix different kits in a larger bucket, or it won't be 100%. This little nugget of info would have come in handy....

5Great ideaSep 21, 2011
By Two Buck Chuck
I used this product on a dingy old concrete basement floor that was previously painted (badly) with what appeared to be regular high-gloss wall enamel. It was ancient and peeling but this epoxy covered it like a champ in a single easy coat. I actually spent far too much time obsessing about scraping and cleaning the old finish in preparation, which was a waste of an afternoon. This epoxy sealed everything tight and 8 months later there is nary a scratch or ding in it. Its astonishing how durable this single-coat finish is, and it inspired me to go on and do the same for my garage floor (with the garage-specific product). I wish I knew years ago that it was this easy to apply and this durable. Well worth the money and time.

4It is what I thought it would beDec 18, 2007
By Jason J. Style "Phezrn"
It is what I thought it would be. Average cost, average shipping. The product works great for the basement. Looks much better after product was put down. Would recommend to anyone instead of just cement paint. The epoxy is the way to go.
