Looks identical to age-old style but doesn't work as well.Sep 03, 2007

First, I have to say how surprised I was at the sudden inability to find this once common product in any of my local stores, including kitchen specialty shops. Three generations of women in my family have used these mats with purchases being as easy as going to the grocery store (and having many color choices instead of today's mere two; white or bisque). Anyway, needing to resort to an online purchase, good old Amazon came through for me and I recieved my sink mat a few days ago.

I didn't expect to be disappointed by this simple, seemingly unchanged design, but I am. Why? Because the eight suction cups just barely work. The otherwise identical looking mat has suction cups that are just a wee bit smaller and, unfortunately, it makes all the difference in the world. I even lightly coated each cup with oil, reapplied the mat to my thoroughly dried (ceramic) sink, and tapped each cup flat with a hammer. It improved their function to the point that now I'm only having to re-stick one or two cups at a time (several times a day) instead of the whole mat constantly coming off.

Why Rubbermaid tinkered with an age-old, proven design is beyond me, but they seem to be the only ones still making these, so I'll have to make do with this mat, which is otherwise functionally fine and of good quality.

POSTSCRIPT a week later: The oil-on-the-cups was but a temporary solution, as you've probably already guessed. I hand-wash my dishes, so the dish detergent made short work of the oil. Now the entire mat is back to falling off a couple times a day. Ahhhh, modern technology. We can put a man on the moon, but .....

As others have stated these are not available locally. Also, the suction cups do not work, at all, so it does slide around. However no other alternatives are better.

I suspect that the reason that this is not as good as older models is because Rubbermaid is no longer an American company. Walmart put them out of business when Rubbermaid wouldn't cheapen their products enough to allow them to make money at the price that Walmart would pay and Walmart was their main customer. When Rubbermaid went bankrupt, a Chinese company bought up the name and all of the equipment and moved it to China. You can see the results.

Its not as flexable as they use to be. The older rubbermaid sink products were much better, the suction cups dont hold like the older ones did, the rubber is much harder now.............Not really impressed

Because of my search for this item, I have learned to check Amazon first when I am shopping for a product. I found this nowhere else. I agree that it does not stick as well as older versions, but I am so glad to have found one of these, that I accept that deficiency. The color bisque matches perfectly with my sink color (4 year old house), while protecting the finish of the sink, and it fits well (not too short or long, etc.). It also allows me to use the top of the sink divider for cleaning purposes, especially pots and pans, without marring the surface of the sink. I did not buy the clear one with the brush because I decided that, although the brush would be handy, it would also be in the way. The clear plastic would actually be more visible, whereas I hardly notice the bisque one on my almond-colored sink. I sure hope that Rubbermaid does not quit making this item.

This divider mat has a very strong chemical odor which hasn't dissipated after 3 days. Not sure how much longer we can stand it. Also the suction cups (just 4 small ones on each side) are worthless - they don't stick, so it slides around some. The old Rubbermaid divider mats had many more suction cups that worked a lot better. I REALLY miss the actual RUBBER Rubbermaid sink mats, dish drainers, etc. that came in lots of colors and didn't smell bad! (I don't know how they can continue using the word "rubber" in their brand name.)
