5Excellent versatility for an SDS+ rotary hammerOct 05, 2009

I recently purchased a Makita SDS+* rotary hammer but had a bunch of regular round shank masonry bits from bit kits and earlier tools. This chuck is fantastic! If your drill/rotary hammer has a plain drilling mode you can even use jobbers, spade bits or whatever non-SDS+ bits you want as well as smooth shank masonry bits.

It doesn't come with instructions but as the other reviewers have stated there's a plastic sleeve that you can pull down and rotate to quickly loosen and tighten the chuck, then use the included chuck key to finish it up and you're ready to go!

In use in concrete it's been great and works exactly as you would expect.

*SDS+, is a standard used by many manufacturers, so accessories and bits are interchangeable, SDS and SDS+ are compatible (although plain SDS bits are pretty much no longer available) and SDS MAX is a larger size with a different groove pattern and is not compatible with SDS or SDS+.

5More versatility for your SDS drillFeb 20, 2006

I use this accessory with drill bits for wood/metal and those arrow shaped tile bits in rotation only mode.

You can hammerdrill with this 3 jaw chuck, for example the bits that come with the blue Tapcon screws, but I prefer sds bits with the 5/16" hex shank for drive sleeves, it is faster to use and a much stronger grip on the drill bit.

My 3 jaw sds chuck did not come with a manual but I figured out that if you pull the collar down and to the left you can quickly and quietly adust the jaws, I dont know what that is about but Bosch has put it so there must be a reason.

I turn my Bosch Bulldog into a drill when I play the uncharged cordless battery game. Sometimes its even handy to use alongside the cordless drill driver.

I had to get used to the rubber boot over the jaws, but really you just push the drill bit through the rubber boot and tighten with the chuck key (all 3 holes for a good grip)

I just learned that SDS means slotted drive system.

When I purchased my Bosch Hammer Drill I was not aware that it used an SDS bit system. Well, I had bought the drill to help with demo and primarily to replace my Milwaukee Hammer Drill that burned out while stirring thinset. When I opened the drill, I realized that I would have to have this adapter for my paddles and bits from the old drill. I actually would up buying two of these, one that I just leave attached to the paddle for now and the other for use with bits. I do like that it is very easy to use as you can seat the bit first, then slide it into the drill. That makes things a little easier.

It is solid and does a good job as a chuck. Fairly simple and solid. Does make the drill even that much longer which almost gets silly at some point. I wish they built in standard chuck capabilities into an otherwise good drill.
