5The Strong Silent Type.Mar 16, 2009
By dream factory
Wonderfully balanced strong mallet. From a renowned line of wood carving accessories. The mallets by 'Wood is Good' have kiln dried hardwood handles and interior. The heads are molded from an indestructable urethane polymere. Its strike is easy on your carving tool's handle yet does not detract from it's force capability. From our experience wood and brass heads do take their toll on those carving handles.

These quintessential contemporary mallets are available in four models. ...This 12 oz. model has an 2.75" head diameter. It is good for delicate work.
....18 oz. also has an 2.75" head. We prefer this model for all our carving. Regular softwood to heavy hitting oak, ash, base-root heartwood. It is a joy to work with this one.
....20 oz. 3.5" head mallet for the big handed lumberjack. Can get tiresome after a short time. And somewhat tedious for upstroke work.
....30 oz. 3.5" head for storming the king's castle.

The mallet to palm marriage is immediate. It's the last mallet you shall ever have to buy. Well worth the price.

5Perfect fit... for the perfect hit!!Dec 30, 2010
By David L. Greco "Keyasharp"
Recently took up woodcharving. My first project was to make a raised letter "welcome" sign to hang by our pool. Bought some rather nice chisels and purchased this mallet from Amazon... WOW. I am a beginner... but the feel on this baby is great. Fits my hand perfectly and the weight (12 oz) is ideal. You can tap out intricate parts or give it a good smash to remove a large section. The 12 oz size is perfect!!(HUMMM... same size as a beer... LOL). Glad I went with this one instead of another type. The design of this mallet does not damage the handle on the chisels. If you are in the market for a mallet... this is your best bet!!!

5Excellent Balance and ConstructionMay 03, 2012
By J. C. Little
You can try to abuse this mallet, but at the end of the day it's going to keep on trucking along. The handle is sturdy with a satin finish, the plastic/rubber sleeve is hard enough to provide a solid transfer of energy to the tool you are using while still possessing enough give to let you feel your way around a carving surface.

Great quality and a great price.

5great mallet, twenty years onApr 16, 2012
By Dr. Jake
I bought my first Wood-is-Good mallet more than twenty years ago. While separated from it in a distant place, I really missed it, so I bought another. The urethane head has exactly the right compliance, giving it the ability to transfer momentum to the chisel without too much shock. (If you have a degree in engineering, you will understand the value of damping... the really high frequencies in the impulse response are filtered out). For the rest of you non-engineer-geeks, you get a smooth transfer of "power" from the mallet to the chisel, and you won't beat the daylights out of your chisel handle.

The feel and balance are perfect. Every woodworker should own one of these.

5Good Wood is Good MalletJan 10, 2012
By Andrew
I purchased this mallet about a year ago along with my first chisels. It has gotten me through learning dovetails and making my first mortises in pine 2x4s. I like that it doesn't mark up my chisel handles and is quieter than a wooden mallet. I also like that the urethane head doesn't seem to get marked up. After a years use mine only has two spots that can be seen upon close inspection so it should keep it's attractive appearance for a long time.
When I start a project that requires chopping mortises in hardwood I will acquire one of the heavier mallets from the Wood is Good Co.
I decided to refinish the handle as it had more texture than I prefer on a tool handle. I sanded to 400grit and then used boiled linseed oil, shellac and paste wax. It is now nice and smooth, really beautiful and ready to give me many more years of service.
