5Love DragonSkin, worked great on wood.Nov 24, 2009

I have been hoarding my last piece of DragonSkin for about 15 years.
I had been unable to find it in stores. Tried a Google search about 2
years ago and had no luck.
Today I finally found it, and glad to see it on Amazon.

What I like best about it is that it aggressively sands
curved edges on wood shapes.
It really takes off the wood.

It does not take well to being sharply bent, as being put in a holder.
It is not sandpaper, it is steel sheet, and you can split it by sharp bends
in the metal it is comprised of.
So I just use it hand-held and go over the shaped edges I need
to work on. I use it to take down rough areas and edges very quickly.
And as the product info shows, wrapping it around a dowel works
well for the curves you need to work on.

It's best use on wood is quick removal of edges and unwanted
areas on curved surfaces. It will also do removal on straight edges.
(You would not want to use it over large flat surface areas of wood.)
The other customer comment described it as a mini-cheesegrater.
That's right.
It is like a mini-surform plane, that conforms to curves as needed.

I once had to use a keyhole saw (had no other equipment)
to cut a large semi-circle in 3/4 ply to make a "moongate"
shape opening to go over a picture window.
I needed a cheap low-tech way to clean my cutting on the edge
(which was actually not bad) and I was lucky to find the
DragonSkin. I got it done, looked great. Comments:"You did that
with a HANDSAW ???"

So that is what DragonSkin is.

I purchased this DragonSkin to shape a microcell foam seat for my kayak. It is a bit like a flexible cheese grater. I used it on the curved side of a rubber sanding block and that worked fairly well, although the DragonSkin did end up tearing on me. Lucklily I purchased three pieces which was more than enough to finish the job. This product is useful for shaping soft material, I'm not sure I would use it on wood. Used with a SureForm tool it made quick work of the seat.

Years ago I somehow came into possession of a Dragonskin sheet and holder, and I always marveled at how well it dug into any material. Eventually the sheet became clogged with paint or something that I couldn't get off. I went looking on Amazon, and there it was, still available!

These things (in a holder or not) are amazing. They're great for quickly shaping material and cleaning up rough edges and burrs. If you must forgo the holder, I recommend some tough gloves.

I have been using the Dragon skin on end grain 21 ply birch. It cleans those edges so fast and it is rigid enough to get into the corners unsupported. End Grain sanding is the bane of all wood work and this makes it a doable project. Glad to see it is till available--mine is also from the dawn of time. but saved this project
