5Fantastic Timer!Dec 22, 2007
By M. Himes
I just finished installing and programming this irrigation timer. All I can say is wow! This thing is awesome! I've used 4 other timers through the years in various houses. All were terrible, an absolute pain to set, with finicky buttons, dials, bad displays, etc. What sets this one apart is the programming method. You simply choose the zone you want to program and then select its start time, run time and days to water - all on one intuitive screen. You never have to turn a dial to select each component of the program individually and you see all settings in one location. You then repeat the process for each zone. Contrast this to other timers that make you think in terms of an A, B, or C program and segregate the programming functions and display of set values into their separate functions, i.e., select start time for each zone, select run time for each zone, select days to run for each zone. Once you've tried the approach used by this Rainbird timer, you'll never want to go back to the other approach.

Pros
- Beyond easy to program
- Easy to install
- Flash memory storage of programming so no battery required
- Display of all programming info related to a single zone shown on one screen
- Zone run time allows up to 240 minutes (important if you do occasional deep water using a drip system)
- Displays the next zone run date and time
- Has the usual features such as an input for a rain sensor, seasonal % adjust, master valve connection, odd/even day run settings, up to 4 run times per day on a zone
- The "water now" feature is dead simple to use
- Has a rain delay button that lets you set a specific time period to keep the water system off
- Feels sturdy and well-made
- Great price
- Also comes in a 4 and 9 zone model

Cons (I didn't view these as cons when considering my purchase because the functionality meets all my needs, but others who need more functionality may view them as such)
- You can only set the first start time that a zone waters on a given day, if you select multiple runs for that zone during the same day (up to 4), the timer uses a pre-set number of hours from your first time to determine the other run times
- It only allows for a 7 day cycle. If you want to run a zone, say every 15th day, you can not program it to do so. You can however, set the zone run time with no associated day and then just manually hit the "water now" button when the zone needs water (this is actually my preferred approach for managing certain of my drip zones containing low water use plants as I watch for stress before giving them a deep water)
- It's meant to be mounted in a weather proof location only (I mounted mine inside my garage). I assume you could mount it inside a weather proof case outside.

Summary: Absolutely the best timer if you are looking for a simple to set (and use) timer and you don't have need for the more complex programming described in the "cons" above.

2No manual operation for all stations, replaced with Orbit modelMar 24, 2009
By Ken Kuhl
My father (75 years old) purchased this Sprinkler System Timer to replace the one he had on his system for the past 15 years. I helped him install it.

Two problems with the Rain Bird Simple Set 6-Station Indoor Automatic Sprinkler System Timer #SST-6001:

1. There is no manual mode to run through all the stations. If you want an extra watering cycle you have to start each station manually. For example, if you have an exceptionally hot, dry day and you want to run each station manually for an extra watering, you have to physically start each station to run manually... six trips to the timer to start each station.

2. Each start time has to be calculated and set. You can not just set the start time for the first station and expect each subsequent station to run after it. If you set the first station to start at 8 AM and run for 10 minutes you have to set the second station to start at 8:11 AM and then the 3rd station to a time after the 2nd station has completed and so forth. Rain Bird says this is not necessary, but in our experience it was.

My father also had an issue with Rain Bird customer service. He called Rain Bird's toll-free customer service number about the above two issues. He asked about the first issue and the customer service rep didn't know the answer and put him on hold to find out from someone else. When he asked the second question the same thing happened. They did answer both his questions, although his experience with issue #2 above was different from the answer he was given, but one should expect the person that answers customer service calls to know the answers without having to seek out someone else.

The customer service issue was magnified by contrast when he called Orbit about the 2nd sprinkler timer he purchased:

While the Rain Bird timer was still installed my father purchased an Orbit Model 57881 timer. When he got home from purchasing it he called Orbit customer service to ask about the same two issues (to see if their timer was able to do these two things.) The Orbit customer service rep answered his questions and even waited while he took it out of the box and went through all the programming steps with him (the Orbit model does not have to be hooked up to operate as long as the battery is installed and the battery is in the unit when purchased.) He was very pleased that he was quickly shown how to do these 2 things on the Orbit before he disconnected the Rain Bird and installed the Orbit. He said the Orbit customer service rep was very knowledgeable, helpful and patient.

That said, this Rain Bird model did operate adequately in all other ways as promised, but these 2 features were important to my father and he is much happier with the Orbit Model 57881. The Orbit is now installed and has been operating for a couple months now. The Rain Bird was disconnected and returned. Also, the Orbit model was less expensive.

Easy to install and program. Works well.
When you want to manually water the yard you must enter each zone seperatly. This would be a good idea if you wanted to water one or two zones only.

My old one you had to push one button and it watered all zones. Which I would prefer it to work.

1Nice interface, but needs additional customization for watering intervalsMay 25, 2009
By Mark R. Hicks
I purchased this unit to replace an older ESP-6. As others have mentioned the unit is very simple in design and fairly easy to set-up. The major problem I have with this unit is the fix intervals if water more than once a day. The ESP allows better customization than the newer SST-600I module. The following is the fix watering times from the first water time:

2 times per day -> 6 Hours
3 times per day -> 4 and 8 Hours
4 times per day -> 3, 6 and 9 Hours

For me, this is simply inexcusable for a modern automatic sprinkler system timer and a serious design flaw. For example, if I desire a two cycles per day and selected the first water time for 8 AM then the second watering time will be at 2 PM. Nice, the second watering time would be in the middle of day which the most of the water would evaporate before being absorbed into the soil.

Perhaps I could have the first watering time at midnight then the second at 6 PM, but this configuration might stimulate mold growth over a period of time.
