5The only knife you'll ever needJul 09, 2005

My first L-1 lasted me for >5 years of near daily use in the trades. It has a slimmer profile than the handsaver models (and fits in my belt better) and is nearly bulletproof. Being able to extend the blade an inch or two is great for tasks like cutting insulation, something you couldn't do w/ an ordinary utility knife. Also, you can limit the depth of cut to 1/8" or so for detail scoring when you don't want your knife to get away from you (also much safer when scoring the backside of a drywall snap)

The best part: Stanley is now making blades that will fit this knife (more expensive, harder to snap) - these work nicely in a pinch but I haven't found them in bulk like the Olfa blades.

OLFA makes very high quality utility knives. I have three of these knives. One in my kitchen, one in the garage, and one in my workshop. This tool is well worth the money!

I do a lot of crafting and art projects that require precision cuts, primarily with thick paper. Olfa knives and blades are the best I have found thus far. Instead of fixed detents you can adjust the blade to just what you need and lock it in with the wheel. It is very comfortable to extend and retract the blade with one hand (at least for a righty) so you don't leave the blade extended unnecessarily. And when locked in place, the blade is super safe and cannot slip.

Also check out the rest of the Olfa line if you like sharp things. I have a rotary cutter and a circle cutter and they are also great tools.

Good feel, solid ratchet lock control. Easy to carry in a pocket.

The break-off blade is an up-grade I have not experienced, so I'll need to try it a bit before I know how well it works.

So far the knife works just fine, and is much easier to use than many I've had in the past.
