3What you should know about this toolDec 22, 2011

Great idea, but you should know it's limitations. Contrary to what Spring Tools says about it, a 2/32" nail starter does not start most finishing nails. Any hand driven 4d or larger finishing nail or casing nail will not fit in the tool. These nails always have an 1/8" (4/32") or larger head. I called Spring Tools and explained that this tool will start brads, not finishing nails, and he said "we call them finishing nails out here". He should know more about nails.

I used it for hand set #4 & #6 finishers pre-drilled in Oak casing, and chipped the tool within the first hour. I believe that in pine it will likely set finishers quite well. I think it chipped in an awkward spot when it wasn't squarely against the head of the nail. Tight quarters is what the tool is touted for, so expect, as another reviewer pointed out, to see damage early on.

It should do well following a nailer on soft trim, so I'm not here to trash the product; I'm only here to help define what it can and can't do.

These things are great to use. I am a finish carpenter and I use mine all the time. It is super useful for setting nails when the gun doesn't shoot it all the way. I love using it. It is quick and easy. It is also really useful for popping the pins out of hinges to take the doors off. By using this you don't have to scuff the paint on the casing with a hammer trying to tap the pin out of the hinge. Well worth it.

I bought this tool as part of the Deluxe 5 Piece Woodcrafter Set at a trade show in Vegas a couple years ago. Just finished using the nail set piece today with a friend of mine who is a professional hardwood floor installer. Had to check his pockets when he left because he fell in love with it. Perfect for moldings and especially for driving finishing nails etc in tight corners under cabinet kicks. A must have tool that you won't use often, but when you do you save on time, money, and most of all frustration.

This item looks a bit awkward to use and I am not sure what size of nails it will drive but it looks very clever and simple to use. It is kind of like using a slingshot; pull back and let the spring pound the nail.
I will try it some day soon. One handed people could not use it.
