ASIN: 6181 There is simply not a better or easier to use knife sharpener to be had. I've had mine mounted of the inside of a cabinet door for probably 40 years. Always at hand, always ready, always a good job, and no hassle. I've just bought 4 for my children for Christmas. Their generation always goes for the high tech. Time to learn that simple can be best.

We attached this sharpener to the inside of our cabinet door and it works wonderfully. It sharpens super fast and it is always right where I need it. All growing up my mom had the exact same sharpener and for at least 25 years it worked great and was always attached right to the cabinet door. It took be a couple years for me to find one like it, but thanks to Amazon, I did. I recommend it fully.

I decided to purchase this item based on reviews. I sharpen my own blades using a stone kit but was tired of breaking out the kit for kitchen knives.
The product is of a design whose operation I have seen before in other devices. It works well for its given application. The unit itself is rather small and unless anchored securely may take some getting used to. Unfortunately, all our kitchen countertops are tile and I am searching for a adequate spot to safely anchor this thing.
The sharpener works by placing the blade edge down in the design slot where two carbide flanges form a angled "v". By drawing the blade towards yourself sharpens the edge. Always draw the blade in the same direction, do not push forward or slide the blade back and forth.
The sharpened edge is very satisfactory for a kitchen knife. With my sharpening tools I can give a far better edge.
For a quick working edge for kitchen knives this product is very satisfactory.

Pros:

* Easily and conveniently mounts on vertical cabinets, walls, anywhere
* Very small "footprint"
* Sharpens quickly and easily in just a few knife strokes
* Sharpens serrated blades
* VERY good if you're using inexpensive knives that lose their edge regularly

Cons:

* Pretty much good only on stainless steel knives (not good on high carbon steel blades)

I recently acquired this Ginsu Sofuto Series 5-Piece Lotus Cutlery Set from Amazon. In my research about the set, I looked up the type of steel used in manufacturing it (420j2 stainless steel) and learned that this is fairly soft, corrosion resistant metal which loses its edge fairly readily. It's one of the more common materials used in manufacturing inexpensive knives. Several of the reviewers of knives made from the same material recommended using an Aladdin Knife Sharpener, so I went ahead an ordered this pretty cheap sharpener as an experiment.

It mounts very easily and (as advertised) "almost anywhere" via a single wood screw. We've got it mounted vertically on a cupboard near the stove and above our sink - the knife set is about 2 feet away.

We used the Santoku knife the most, and after about a week, though not dull, the knife was definitely losing its edge. Three downward strokes in the Aladdin, and the knife INSTANTLY felt like it had just come out of the box, fully sharpened. I also sharpened one of our older serrated steak knives, and that, too, was noticeably sharper. I don't know if one should do this, but now I regularly give any knife I'm using a couple of quick downward strokes before every use. If anyone knows why I shouldn't do that regularly, let me know!

This is a small, humble device that gets an easy 5 stars for doing what it says it does well. If you don't spend a lot of money on kitchen knives, this is a must-have for keeping what you do have in top sharpness.
