3good paint, but be carefulJul 03, 2010

I have used UpShot for many years to cover stains on popcorn ceilings. It works ok, but it does not match exactly when used on aged ceilings. It dries totally white instead of the slightly gray tint that most ceilings have. More importantly, NEVER use a can of UpShot which has been stored in your garage over the summer. Instead, buy a fresh can. The age of the product I used, probably combined with the heat in my garage, caused the paint to take on a darkish gray tint, which in turn re-stained my ceiling when I used it. Then, only repainting with another brand of roll-on ceiling paint would cover the UpShot gray. In summary, always use UpShot sparingly, from a fresh can, and don't expect it to exactly match.

Short story: it works great, but the powder that drops is very messy.

Long story (if you care): The sloped portion of the ceiling in our kitchen/living room suffered terrible water damage on Tuesday when our skylights leaked during a snowstorm. It seriously looked like someone poured coffee down the drywall. We're having a party at our house on Friday, so something had to be done, and painting the whole ceiling was not an option...too high...too big...not enough time.

So after researching it a little, I bought a can of Kilz UpShot and a 8-pack of plastic drop cloths at HD. Prep time to tape up the drop cloths and cover everything took a while, but the actual paint and dry time was minimal. It took two coats total to completely mask the stains, and the color couldn't be better! It blends perfectly with flat white ceiling paint that's aged a little.

As for the "yellow" comments in other reviews, the dust (the paint is like a powder coat) does have a yellowish tinge, but on the ceiling it looks white. As for the dust, it was EVERYWHERE! I turned off the ceiling fans and the furnace to ensure there was no air current in the house...it didn't matter. Thankfully I put the prep time in and bought the jumbo 8-pack of drop cloths (I used all 8, and even had to reuse three of them for my final spray location, so I guess I needed 11).

After all the cleanup (mostly just trashing the drop cloths), the ceiling looked great and the room was back to normal in time for the party. I realize this was just a temporary fix as the skylights need to be fixed, but it served its purpose.

Total cost $10.65. Total time ~ 4 hours (almost all prep). The huge mess of fine powder residue that went EVERYWHERE requires too much prep/clean up time, which is the only thing that kept me from giving this a 5-star rating. Overall, I was very pleased with the results. My only advice is to buy the jumbo pack of drop cloths and invest the time in the prep work to help contain the mess.

I covered everything in the room and every wall with plastic, and I am glad I did, as when I was done a fine dusty paint film was on every bit of plastic! It was all over me as well, which concerns me. As for the ceiling, my ceiling is not very old, so it is not yellowed, but this stuff is yellow, so now I swear it looks worse. Don't use this product. It is a waste of money, it smells horrible, it covers everything in paint dust, and it doesn't work. I am now searching for something else.

I was amazed that this product actually worked they way it is supposed to work! After a horrible winter, I needed something to cover a water stain on my ceiling tile. It covered the stain and the ceiling looks good as new! I also got it at a great price!
