5A must...May 23, 2007
By Marshdrifter
The 45-5 is a must for any archaeologist. There are those who prefer the 6-inch 45-6, but I feel that model has too much flex, which can cause you to gouge your walls.

Whether you prefer the 45-5 or 45-6, Marshalltown (golden or not) is the way to go.

5the archaeologist's best friendAug 05, 2007

My Marshalltown has been used for over 13 years and other than being scuffed up and a bit smaller from repeated edge sharpening, still works as well as day one. There is a reason that this brand is the preference of many archaeologists.

5Best Quality in a Small TrowelJul 07, 2000
By Al the Pal "Al the Pal"
I originally bought this trowel to use while participating in a local archeological dig - at the suggestion of the professor in charge. After looking at the competition, I could see he was right. The handle is forged to the blade on the Marshalltown; the cheap competition has rivets. The wood handle stays cool in the hot sun. I put a relatively sharp edge on it for the "dig" in order to shave thin layers of hardened dirt away with it. I have since ground it to a blunt edge again. I have bought other high quality Marshalltown tools since then and used them with great satisfaction.

5Don't Dig With Anything ElseMay 19, 2010
By J. Bean
I've used the 45-5 for over 30 years. I've thoroughly abused this trowel by using it underwater,
in hard-pan clay soils, and in very rocky soils. It has never failed me, which is important
because trowels are not readily available throughout the world. After a couple of decades of
use and resharpening, I find that I have removed so much metal that my 5" trowel is now a 3" trowel.

I can't imagine using any other trowel. The 45-5 takes and holds an edge well and can withstand
being sharpened on a grinding wheel.

Simply put, the 45-5 is the archaeologist's best friend.

5Archaeologist's Best FriendNov 02, 2005
By W. Griffiths "Student"
As the other reviewer indicates, this is the trowel of choice for archaeologists in the U.S. and large portions of the rest of the world. Its tempered steel is higher quality and holds an edge better than any other brand out there. It's even a bit flexible, but still very strong. As a consequence, a Marshalltown trowel will outlast any other. I've got six field seasons on mine and it's good for several more. Any other brand of trowel will waste precious field time being resharpened, and wear out after 2-3 seasons. Do yourself a favor and go with the real McCoy.

I can't vouch for the "intended" purpose of cement work with these. Archaeologists wouldn't know what to do without them, though.
