4Maasdam A-20 Rope Puller - Outstanding for guiding treesAug 30, 2010

Based on two+ weeks of hard use and remembering the 1500 pound capacity, the Maasdam A-20 is ideal for guiding trees as they are felled. I'm thinning out fifty foot high pines (with weak root systems) from surrounding hardwoods and the A-20 (plus wedges) is ideal for controlling the direction. I substituted a 100' 1/2-inch rope which gets tied off at 15 to 20 feet high. Felling cuts and wedges do the work while the 1500 pound pull and energy stored in the stretched rope helps guide the falling pine to clear surrounding branches. Several times when the pines hung up, the A-20 pulled the tree clear of the surrounding hardwood branches. The ability to keep taking in the rope as needed is what separates this tool from normal, higher capacity steel-cable "power pullers", limited to a six to ten foot range. Also, a cable puller does not allow you to "stretch" several feet of the pull line to keep some tension even as the tree starts to move. The tool is very well-made and the "automatic" release system works well for releasing tension. Up to 1500 pounds, this is my puller of choice. The only reason I did not rate it at 5 stars is that I have used it for less than three weeks.

Versatile, I use any length rope which is something I've wanted for a long time and I find myself reaching for this comealong first before my cable or strap ones for horizontal pulls. Use according to instructions on vertical lifts, control how the tail feeds out.

It worked great though I must say that if I purchased another one I would get the one with the cable and a higher lift rate. I was moving a tree stump with it and the rope would slip. I think that the 3/4 ton capacity is over-stated.

Went off the trail on my snowmobile, down an embankment, over some downed trees. I had shorten the handle to fit on the sled, but it still had plenty of pulling power. Pulled the sled up over the logs and got me out of a real jam. It would have been 20+ miles to get more help. But my wife and I got it out! Worked great. Really nice that the rope feeds thru and is not like a wire come-along that the spool fills up. So it is easy to adjust the length you need.
