Incredibly Handy for the DIY Audio GeekApr 18, 2012

These blanks are really designed to fill unused places in a Leviton wall plate (for CAT5e connectors). However, I have been able to use them as mounting surfaces for some 3.5 mm 'stereo' jacks...but I am using them not as stereo jacks, but to carry a balanced audio signal. I know that you can find these on-line (with the 'stereo' 3.5 mm jack in the blank...but they are quite pricey, especially if you need many of them - like so many things, if you have the interest, time, know-how, you can save a lot of money going the DIY route). Let me explain...

I have a distributed audio system in my house which has a line-level distribution amplifier as its backbone, which provides a balanced left and right audio feed to each room in which I have a CAT5e drop, as well as a small stereo system. So, by simply drilling out a suitably-sized hole in these blank inserts, you can pass a 3.5 mm 'stereo' jack through these, and eventually, snap them into place like any other connector designed to mate with the Leviton plates. In my particular application, I have two of these home-made inserts per wall plate in order to yield the left and right channels from the distributed (stereo) audio feed; effectively this gives me a pair of balanced signals in a very small space. From there you just need a 3.5 mm connector that can be wired to an XLR male to provide the output signals to your gear as needed, and you are able to enjoy all the benefits that a balanced audio line can give to you.

I did this because the traditional (and admittedly more correct (and definitely more mechanically robust)) approach would be to use XLR male connectors rather than these. However, such connectors take up a fair amount of surface area on a wall plate, and I didn't want the wall plates to be any bigger / more visible than they already are.

So in essence, I just use the blank inserts as a template; once the hole has been drilled in them and the 3.5 mm jack has been mounted to these, I then solder the three conductors in the wires carrying the balanced audio signal to the proper terminals of the 3.5 mm jack. Having done that, I just snap them into the Leviton plate, and I end up having my CAT5e drops (for my digital needs), and below those, my left and right audio signals (to feed my analog jones). Best of all, because the signals are on balanced lines (and the downstream gear mates with the appropriate devices to turn the balanced signals back to RCA-style unbalanced connectors which can then easily be connected to an audio system), I have a noise-free, full-fidelity signal available to another location.

So...while these are indeed blanks, and they function just fine as such, they have also been incredibly handy in allowing me to solve a packaging / signal integrity issue.

used a few of these to fill in a few holes on a quick port wall plate. These are high quality but my wall plate isn't so I had to file a few edges to get it to fit, but they were perfect on a different wall plate that was much higher quality. Would buy again.
