4Nice auger bits with a little workFeb 11, 2012
By Ronald Broadhead "Ron"
For some reason, when I post a review for this product, the review also shows up under other sizes of Irwin hand-braced auger bits in the 436XX series. I have purchased several sizes in this series so this review is an average for all of them.

These auger bits are made to be used in an old-style hand brace. They have a square tapered shank at one end that fits into a square hole in the bottom of the brace chuck; this keeps the bit from slipping in the brace while drilling. The jaws of the brace clamp the round shaft of the brace in place.

The modern American Pattern hand brace dates from the middle 1800's. The design of these bits dates from about the 1880's. These bits are for drilling wood only. They are not hard enough to drill through steel. The tip of the bit has a tapered screw point that not only starts the bit at the precise point you wish to drill a hole, but also guides the bit through the wood as you drill. The screw point transfers the lateral circular motion of the bit into a vertical force that helps pull the but down through the wood as you drill. These particular bits have the Irwin design of flute that passes the wood shavings to the top of the drill hole as you drill. The end of the bit has two cutting edges. There used to be several manufacturers of this type of brace bit, but now I know of only two, the Irwin and a more expensive line made in England. The English bits use the Jennings design variant. There are some tapered shank auger bits out of Sweden, but the photos I have seen seem to indicate that they have only a single cutting head. The Irwin bits are available in diameter increments of 1/16 inch starting at 1/4 inch whereas the other lines seem to be available in 1/8 inch increments or at least that's how I've seen them sold. These Irwin bits are made in Brazil.

These are fairly decent auger bits and work very well with a little work. Some have clean cutting edges with no molding flash and work well right out of the package. On some however, the cutting surfaces have molding flash that interferes with drilling, usually by blocking passage of the wood shavings to the flute. The result is that the end of the bit becomes fouled and packed with wood shavings. When this happens, the cutting edge loses contact with the wood and your brace will turn in the boring without further drilling. Fortunately the problem can be solved by carefully removing the flash with jewelers files or a fine metal-cutting bit attached to a Dremel tool. This process took me only a few minutes per bit. After the molding flash has been removed, the bit works just fine. Be careful not to wear down the cutting edges when you do this. There is a review on a 13-piece set of these bits by a gentleman who had similar experiences.

One nice feature of these bits is that they come in a heavy duty, reusable plastic storage sleeve that protects the bit when not in use. This is very handy as you can store the bit in a toolbox or drawer with other metal tools and not have bit dulled through contact with those tools.

If you like the advantages of drilling deeper holes through wood with a hand brace, then this is one of the few options available for new bits and maybe the only option for new bits in 1/16 inch diameter size increments. I'm fairly happy with these. They make a nice addition to my workshop. Just a couple of decades ago one could buy this type of bit at most hardware stores and department stores with a good tool section, but they are now hard to locate, having been replaced by other bit styles meant to work in electric drills. Amazon is one of the few places where these bits are still readily available.
