5Quick change/storage razor knifeFeb 28, 2010

Scheffield created this knife a few years ago and I learned to like it. The later models work similarly but have one flaw. The blade comes out if you hold it normally for hard/deep cuts. because of the design of this model you don't have that worry. I ordered several to put in my office to have when the crew steals mine. Yes they want it that badly!!
Storage is at your finger tips and changing blades is fast and easy. I use the old screw type-changing knives to beat on and loan out. They are basically historic relics of the past that are used for abuse and for workers that loose or don't respect quality tools.
I use this type knife many times a day and it always works perfectly...

Love this knife to bits... but thats the (only) problem. The screw that the blade pivots on gets loose often and unless you see it/tighten it, one side will fall out. I'm just about to order my third knife cause of this. Still would not use any other type of knife and no other brand. (Hu$ky sucks!)

Simply the best utility knife I have ever used. Changing blades requires no tools and takes about 8 seconds with extra blades cleverly located in the handle. Tough, durable well made chasis can handle daily abuse. The folding lock-back feature makes it very compact and with the attached belt clip this knife is an easy light weight all day carry.

My friend gave me his used Sheffield 12119 (This same knife, with the same model number. Great Neck owns Sheffield), I have had it a couple of years and I love it. This is light years ahead of my old favorite, an ancient Stanley Bostitch Quick-Change Utility Knife with Retractable Blade and Twine Cutter, Silver (10-499) given to me by another friend. The 10-499 is an excellent knife in it's own right. Mine was probably at least 30 years old! But time and design roll on!

The best features from the 10-499 were the quick, tool less blade change and the blade storage in the handle also accessible with no screwdriver.

The Sheffield/ Great Neck 12119 also has quick tool less blade change and blade storage in the handle but in this knife the blades lock down super tight so there is no wiggle during use! This is a great feature when using the tool at it's capacity such as when cutting carpet or asphalt shingles!!

It also folds up to a smaller pocketable (in work clothes) package and locks open like a regular pocket knife (think Buck).

There are a plethora of look alike folding utility knifes on the market now, but I tried another brand and was unimpressed. KR Tools Elite Stainless Steel Folding Utility Knife

I thought, "Nice! Same design with blade storage in handle but in solid stainless steel!"

The knife looks great, but the blade holder is not the same design. The blade is loose and it can't be tightened.

I gave it away and bought two more Sheffields! One came with a loose blade, but after pinching the holder a little bit with pliers it was as tight as my other two! I use these things many times every day! One lives in the pocket of my work jacket, another in my "Go To" tool box and another in my kitchen junk drawer!

Don't under estimate the value of a solid locking blade and onboard blade storage! Some of these knives lose their blades when the blade gets pinched, a real pain to keep replacing the blade! A solid non wiggling blade is far easier to cut with aggressively!
You can go through multiple blades on a single quick job, blades are cheap and a sharp blade is much quicker and safer to use!! If you have onboard storage and quick toolless changing capability you will always use a sharp blade increasing your productivity and satisfaction!!

One problem I did have with this knife was that the PVC handles were coated in some sort of rubberized coating that never seemed to cure! It just stayed soft and rubs off... looks awful but doesn't affect the use of the tool. I'm thinking of using a solvent to remove the stuff once and for all!

Bought this for a friend as a surprise and found out that she already had one. So I kept it. OH MY GAWWWD!! It is THE perfect utility knife. It feels great in your hand. The grip is firm but with a little give so you don't get blisters during those box-cutting frenzies. It holds the blades inside and changing blades is a snap! I've never seen anything like it.
