5No more bubblesApr 10, 2011

I'm not a pro; just an occasional do-it-yourselfer. In studying up on drywall application, I read that--counterintuitively--paper drywall tape gives a stronger joint than fiberglass tape, and is generally used by professionals. Unfortunately, after finishing my first few small projects, I still hadn't got the knack of not getting bubbles in my taped joints. When using paper tape, you put down a layer of drywall compound, then embed the tape in this, and finally lay more compound over the tape, If you "squeegee" the tape too firmly with your plaster knife, you squeeze all the compound out from under the tape, and it has nothing to adhere to, and you get a bubble. But if you don't use the knife firmly enough, you get a bulging and ugly joint. Like I said, I haven't yet acquired the knack of hitting the right balance.

Rather than switch to fiberglass tape (which has its own pitfalls for the inexperienced user), I decided to try this product. Unlike standard drywall tape, it has a water-activated adhesive on one side, like pre-pasted wallpaper. The scanty instructions that come with the tape suggest that you don't need to put drywall compound onto the joint before applying the tape. This sounded like a bad idea to me--the crevasse of the joint would be an empty void, rather than being filled with compound. So I used it the same as regular paper tape, with the additional step of wetting the tape in a pail of water before applying it. I laid compound down along my joint, then embedded the wet tape, then put more compound on top. With the adhesive incorporated into the tape, I was pretty sure I didn't have to worry about whether I squeegeed all the compound out from under the tape, and that proved to be the case. I got perfect joints every time.

I imagine professional drywallers would turn their noses up at this product, but for me it was a terrific help.
