The metal ring at the junction of the wood and the awl shaft came off--not glued on well enough? Still, this is a great tool and it works well. I use it to punch holes in book board (about the same thickness/strength as chip board) and it works like a charm.

5A Quality Scratch Awl that's Made in USA!Oct 30, 2011

I bought this from a local store I found that sells only products made in America. Previously, I looked at the popular Stanley model, but felt it was too thin and noticed that it was not Made in USA. (at least the ones I found in stores) This scratch awl feels good and solid in my hand. The ferrule goes all the way through the wooden handle and has a nice metal cap on the end so you can give it a tap without worrying about hammering the handle. The tip is quite sharp and is great for scribing lines and punching points as marks or to start screws. I personally prefer the feel and shape of this wooden handle for a scratch awl vs. plastic screwdriver types.

Like I said, it feels great in my hand and the one I bought was Made in USA, but I can't guarantee whether or not the one you buy will also be made in Amercia, as I don't know if General makes these exclusively in the US or not. If you're shopping for a scratch awl, though, I'd highly recommend this one. It's made right and won't disappoint.

I recently had this item ordered (same item number 818) and it was not what the picture shows. The awl is not long and tapered into a fine point (which is what I need for book-binding), but rather has a short and stubby point. I had to have it altered to work properly.

I need something a little thinner and without so much of a taper for working w/ paracord, but overall this is good quality and has helped.
