I bought two of these. Not only does the one work amazingly well in the bird bath, but the other one I put on a pot of dirt, scatter dirt and small gravel over it, and that heater got even more action than the heated bird bath! And that is saying a lot since I am in Northern Wisconsin and we get sixty below zero nights in the winter! (meaning we get 60, or more, below zero nights during the winter months). Birds would not only eat the gravel and the small pile of sunflower seeds, but would sit on the heated dirt and enjoy the warmth and because the container had an inch lip around, it kept a bit of the wind off the birds too.
I highly recommend to any serious bird watcher, that if you are going to heat water, you might want to consider buying two and heat a dirt bath too!

Econo Bird Bath 44 Watts
Bought one for the winter of '05 and '06 and it has worked well. No electrocutions yet! It does not work well with a 3" snow fall or more but keeps the water unfrozen 90% of the time. The birds seem to appreciate it.

I just couldnt see spending the cost heated birdbaths were going for, and some of the birdbath heaters. I picked this up and it works great. Simple construction, priced reasonably,and keeps the birdbath unfrozen, which is all it needs to do. Nothing fancy but it doesnt need to be. I did find that the cord was pretty short, and it would have been great had it been just a few inches longer as it made it difficult to sit properly when plugged in but not a huge concern.

Okay I am re-doing my review. This will be the 3rd year I am again purchasing two of these. I have 2 birdbaths. As soon as I get done with this review I am ordering 2 more again for this winter. In the past I have bought the expensive ones and they usually quit working after one winter. I also don't trust to run them a 2nd season because I don't want to electrocute the birds or me. Thus far these have always worked for me. I haven't received a faulty one and thus far I have ordered 4 of them (2 for each winter). I appreciate that they don't cost much, because even the expensive ones go bad and usually don't work the whole season and for sure not next. These ones also keep a larger area defrosted unlike the more compact expensive de-icers.

So these are the most economical ones out there that I know of. I also like how they lay flat with a few rocks on top. The birds like this. They love sitting on the warm rocks sipping the water in the winter. I put them under a few rocks to hold them in place and they work all winter. I don't mess with them until I throw them away in the Spring. Every spring I throw them away and order new ones for the next winter. I consider them disposable and I don't like to use any birdbath de-icer for more then one winter. That's just me. Once I set them up for winter I don't clean the birdbaths till next spring when I throw these things away. By the next Spring these and any of the expensive ones look so crappy I wouldn't trust to use them a 2nd season and these are the most reasonable priced ones and they lay nice in the birdbath. They do a better job and I have had the expensive ones. Once I bought these I have never went back to the others, they don't last any longer anyway. At least not through the hard winters I get. It freezes almost every night in the winter where I live.
