Gutter Genius DIY Gutter CoversAug 06, 2011

After looking at different alternatives for clogged gutters, I decided on going for a design which provided a solid cover versus a mesh or screened cover. I couldn't see that the mesh or screen types wouldn't ultimately clog up too.

I installed these covers myself without any trouble. They were installed on brand-new 5" seamless aluminum gutters. The hardest task is getting them under the shingles, but without exception, they all slipped under relatively easy once started. If an occasional under-shingle nail is preventing you from getting the panel into position, simply trim a relief area with a scissors or metal shears. The clips serve two purposes - 1) hold down the front edge of the cover to the gutter,and 2), set the somewhat critical gap distance (5/32") between the front edge of the gutter and the rolled bullnose of the cover. The only suggestion I would make to the supplier would be to increase the number of clips furnished. Included are seven (7) clips with each 12 foot kit. Just two (2) more per kit would be a REAL plus, thereby allowing three (3) clips per 4 foot panel. The instructions mention overlapping the panels by 2"-3", then simply using one clip at that junction. That's fine, but this is a case where more is better. These clips are stamped from soft aluminum which is both good and bad. Good because they will deform somewhat when the "fit" to the gutter isn't quite right, and bad, because over time, I think the clips may become loose, even fall off. Don't let that worry you, however. The solution is to use clear silicone adhesive on BOTH sides of the clip after they've been installed. While not mentioned in their instructions, they did mention this aid or fix in their FAQ's on their website. I used the silicone adhesive and felt much more confident about the installation. I think the silicone adhesive should be a mandatory step in the installation instructions, or you'll likely find yourself ordering more clips from they're website and having to re-install.

The first rain went nicely - the water did exactly what it should do - flow around the bullnose and dripped into the gutter. The real test will come this Fall to see how well it repels leaves, twigs and other debris. I've been cleaning the gutters three times a year for many years - I'd be happy if I only had to do it every two years.

The cost of these units are VERY attractive for a solid cover design. Made from .019" thick aluminum, they're easy to cut and bend if needed. The four color selections are nice too. Do I recommend this product? You bet! So far so good, but the Fall will tell the story.

When I bought my house, the original owner had left behind a stack of three different styles of gutter guards. He had one-piece vinyl gutter guards that slide under the shingle and I managed to take care of one side of the house in a half hour. The Elko GutaGard (AKA Gutter Genius) was the next challenge, but I was optimistic that it would be straightforward and I was excited that the product seemed to be an elegant design. Well, here's the problem: my gutters are 12 feet from the ground and they are not exactly straight. They have a few bends (not too noticeable from the ground) from the dozen or so times that a ladder was leaned against it and the gutter got squeezed. Sound familiar? Well, if your gutter is not new, these slight bends wreak havoc on installing the Guard. The clips will not clamp tight if the rim is warped. You'll find yourself fidgeting with screwdriver and a clip that has a tendency to slip off, and either fall to the ground or into the gutter, or into the gutter and down the down-spout (bye-bye little clip). As you're fooling around with twisting these little clips, try not to look down. Your feet will need to be very steady as your switching from holding pliers, screwdriver and metal shears. I'm still waiting to see how the Guards weather through a New England winter. I'm not convinced that the little clips would hold through a mild nor'easter. Even while I was twisting on some of the clips, some of the other clips would loosen, like fighting a losing battle. I lost a few clips that popped off into the bushes and now I have some left over sheets that I either need to order additional clips or just abandon the whole, painful process. The only plus side of the Guards is that it doesn't look too shabby if you have a roof that over-looks a lower roof. I guess my neighbor's house, which has a towering view over my roof, will appreciate the great pains of my labor.
