3Filler may expand over time in humid climatesMay 31, 2010

Plastic Wood Filler

I used this product for many years for repairing countersunk nail holes and other minor wood defects.

Pros:

- Patches dry quickly at room temperature and above.

- Can be drilled, sanded, scraped, stained, painted, cut, chiseled, planed, polished, or varnished and will hold nails, tacks or screws.

- Stronger (when dry) than Elmer's Carpenter Wood Filler (a popular filler).

- Available in neutral (this product) and numerous colors (e.g., mahogany, pine, read oak, maple, golden oak, walnut, and light oak).

Cons:

- With the lid off, the filler in the can dries faster than water-based wood fillers. Before it dries out and the filler becomes useless, add a tiny quantity of acetone and stir with a flat bladed screwdriver or very narrow trowel. To retard drying, replace the lid on the can each time after scooping out what you need.

- Acetone is needed to clean tools and your fingers.

- A patch sometimes expands a bit after several years. E.g., most of the countersunk nail holes on our oak staircase, previously patched with Plastic Wood, eventually rose about 1/64", which was obvious to the eye and to the touch. My guess is that Plastic Wood patches absorb moisture from the surrounding wood and expand as a result. I live in a humid climate (Washington D.C. area); expansion probably wouldn't be an issue if you live in a dry climate.

Summary:

If you live in a humid climate be aware that Plastic Wood patches may expand ever-so-slightly over the years.

You can sand it and stain or paint it. Easy to work with and bonds to all types of materials. Also works better than wood glue.
