4Works well, but be awareMay 31, 2011

First of all the product is a very smart idea. After installation the product works as advertised and saves me a great deal of time when doing yard work. I'll have a much better idea of product performance when hurricane season begins. The wood seems to be of good quality as I was originally concerned how well it was going to hold up. The only problem I had was a by product of having very hard ground where I live. Due to that, I purchased extra stakes because I knew the first six inches would be easy, but the remaining six to seven would be very challenging. This proved to be the case. In the process of hammering them in I split several sticks. If you have very hard ground I would recommend that you put the pins in before beginning to hammer as I had a few instances where I had to hammer so vigorously that the top rolled over where the pin hole was. I may have been able to save the spike were it not for that. All in all a great product that I would highly recommend and purchase again. I can't fault the product for the very hard ground that I have.

We live in an extremely windy area so trees stakes are a necessity. I tried this product years ago and like it for several reasons. Pros: It is easier for a woman to install - though I'd recommend making a hole in hard soil with a crowbar first. Too mow you simply slip out the anchors, drape them over the tree and mow right over the stake. Cons: In extremely windy areas as the tree grow eventually the top part of the tree leans away from the wind, but then eventually that occurs no matter the type of stake.

The stakes are fine. if your mashing up the top then us a block in between the stake and mallet/hammer. The problem that i have is there are to many possible points of failure and it is just plain ugly. The wooden stakes are cool and "green" looking, but they are all the way into the ground so you don't see them. The ugly black rope is connected to the stake via a small metal pin that slides into the back of the stake at a 45 degree angle back toward the tree. This idea is good in theory, but with a little slack as the instructions want, any pressure other than straight toward the tree pulls the pin out with ease (to much ease). They should have had it push in and then a quarter turn to lock or something. My main gripe is the way it connects to the tree. They provide about 3 feet of ugly black wrap (looks like bandage wrap). Your supposed to wrap it around twice then start wrapping it through the three loops you have tied in the end of the rope. Then magically at the end just "tuck it in". C'mon, just "tuck it in" doesn't work worth a crap. What your left with is 4 points of possible failure: the pin falling out, the wrap unraveling, and the knots at each end of the rope not holding. If you've ever tried to tie a tight knot in a plastic rope, you know they don't get tight or hold well. This is a classic case of over engineering. And when you bring home that little crab apple or oak tree for your yard the last thing you want is some all black wrap and rope holding it down..UGLY. My suggestion is to learn from my mistake and try not to save a couple bucks and just get something at your local store. I'm paying to return these now and it sucks.

The package comes with everything you need including plenty of rope. Included in the package are 3 stakes, rope, felt (to go around the trunk of the tree) and 3 eye-pins. BE WARNED - the stakes are very long (which is good), but in order to get them down in the ground far enough so you can mow over, you will need to smack them many many times!! The first one i put in broke half way in - so now i have to buy another pack to finish the tree! Lesson learned - use a crow bar to pre-drill/pound the hole for the stake. Once i did this the other two went in just fine. I was also worried about the eye-pins falling out with a strong breeze, but so far, so good. I should also be able to adjust the ropes as the tree grows.

In Colorado we have windy days very often, and much of that time the winds are very strong. This has held up well and has kept my apple tree upright. The pins are easy to remove and the stakes go in deep enough to not be damaged by my mower. Would definitely buy again.
