4Best for carpentry workAug 06, 2007

This Luskin folding rule is the absolute best for doing carpentry work. After years of using a traditional metal tape measure I've gone back home to the wooden folding rule.

My grandfather who was a master carpenter used these exclusively. They are great because they lay flat on surfaces and don't jump around like traditional tape measures. The extending end gives you easy perfect measures on inside sections easily. I would suggest paying a few bucks more and get this one because that metal extender is a life saver.

The construction is sturdy and made to last a lifetime. The markings are clear and easy to read.

I have used the folding rule for years while doing interior trim work. Nothing is easier to use for inside measure. My old Lufkin rule became loose at the joints and at the brass extension after much use.
The new rule is already loose at the extension right out of the box. There is no apparent way to "tighten" up the slide so I guess I'll just have to live with it. "They don't build em like they used to"

My father always used a wooden rule for fine carpentry work, and this Lufkin is just like the one he used. It still has the metal extension, which facilitates depth measurements and exact inside measurements. I'll still keep a tape handy, for times when I need to measure long distances, but for work close at hand, this rule rules!

This is actually a 6' folding rule with a 6" metal extension tip. This item is a must for measurements in areas with exposed electrical conductors (careful with the metal extension). For tradesmen; comfortably fits in your back pocket along with a 9" torpedo level. Easier to carry and use and safer around live electrical circuits than a metal tape measure.

Bottom line: I carried around a Craftsman folding rule for over 18 YEARS !! without a problem. Occasional oiling of the joints and keeping it clean was all I did. I finally dropped it off a roof and broke it in two. Sad day.

I replaced it with a Lufkin and it wasn't in service for two weeks before the non-slide end snapped off at the hinge. Thinking this was possibly due to me somehow, I replaced it with another one from the same source. THIS one developed a loose joint (probable broken spring) within two months of purchase; I can twirl it around, no grab whatever.

Whatever quality Lufkin may once have had, it appears to be gone now. I won't be buying any more, that's for sure. I'm hoping Craftsman still makes 'em the way they used to.
