4Does not contain solderAug 17, 2008
By Jan Dolinay
The tip is too big for electronics work except for soldering wires together and things where there is lot of space around. But that's not what this tool is primarily for, so no problem with that. Otherwise it works nice, no overheating. But note that the set does not contain any solder. Just 5 tips, stand and a booklet. So order some solder also if you need it.

4Good Quality Iron - RecommededMar 28, 2010
By C. F. Hill "CFH"
We use the Weller "Hobby Iron" for a variety of hobby and crafting applications, including plastic shaping and wax carving. This is a decent quality tool and the short barrel gives you more control for doing detailed work. This set comes with several tips for that can be used for specific tasks and I find the "blade" very useful for wood and wax carving.

I have not used this set for soldering but, being an electronics technician bench tech for the first 5 years of my career (a very long time ago, indeed), I would invest in a better longer barrel soldering iron instead of using this one for anything other than the casual of uses.

Overall, this is good hobby iron that is also good value for that you get.

Recommended!

5good for solderingApr 08, 2008
By Richard Nixon
Am using it for soldering and hasn't given me any problems, yet. Don't really expect it to either. Did a little research and Weller is a good brand to go with in this price range and am not disappointed.

Caveat: Don't use the "golden" (copper?) tips for soldering. They oxidize horribly when used to solder. The metal tip works, great, however. Doesn't oxidize easily as long as you tin and clean it as much as you should. Don't know about wood.

5This is NOT a soldering iron!Jul 31, 2011
By M. Piantanida
C'mon folks, please use some common sense here.
For those who complain and even remove stars because the kit doesn't include solder, there's a good reason for this.
THIS IS NOT A SOLDERING IRON.
This is a HOBBY iron. It is designed for woodburning, leather embossing, etc..
Expecting it to come with solder is like buying a hammer and expecting it to come with a measuring tape.
Yeah, they might be sometimes used together, but that's not the primary purpose of a hammer. This is not a perfect analogy I know, but you get the point I hope.

This is a good quality iron for the price. If you need a more advanced (and expensive) woodburning iron, there are good choices here and elsewhere.
If you need a soldering iron for electronics work, get one with a thermostatic temperature control and fine tips.

I wish people would only comment on things of which they have at least some knowledge, rather than reducing the rating of an item needlessly.

Speaking of rants, mine's done now. :)

4useful for wood burningMay 08, 2012
By bamu-chan
We use this for burning decorations into wood projects. It comes with 5 different brass-colored tips (which we use for wood-burning) and one silver-colored tip (which we assume is for soldering.) We haven't used it for soldering. It does NOT come with solder included, by the way. Also comes with no instructions for use as a wood-burning/craft tool. Packaging did include a brief description of how to use as a soldering tool.
