5Great all-purpose soldering toolFeb 23, 2008

I am not sure why others have rated this iron so poorly. I haven't had any problems using this soldering iron. This is the first one I've ever owned, and it's pretty easy to use. It heats up quickly and adequately for soldering Silver-containing solder with no problems for audio electronics. I do recommend getting a better soldering iron stand with a cleaning sponge for better safety practices and tip maintenance. The other feature I like is using other quality Weller tips which are reasonably easy to find in local hardware stores and electronics shops.

I purchased this iron to do small jewelry work - thinking the small tip would work ... It worked for about 2 or 3 uses great - but then the tip broke off ... the chisel tip melted ... now I can't seem to find replacement tips ... SUCKS

I intend to solder some components on PCB boards but this things barely heats up, even after waiting for very long time. The solder does not melt.
I have used Weller before but this model is certainly not recommendable, good for the garbage bin.

I have to solder a ribbon wire with 8 closely spaced leads to a small printed circuit board and this kit is made to order. The needle point tip is just the right size. The 40 watt power is just right. Not too hot, and hot enough to do the job. It came with a small sized coil of solder that is a perfect fit. The stand keeps the iron from burning my counter top. There is no instruction on what to do with that two ended piece of black plastic, but it was perfect for manipulating the wires onto the right spot on the circuit board and hold it there while I melt the solder. What seemed like a daunting job was accomplished easily with this iron. The repair I made saved a non-functioning part that fully pays for this soldering kit. The included needle tip would have cost almost as much as this kit if bought separately. A terrific value. Highly recommended for people with need to solder small wires.

Does everything its supposed to. Best nonadjustable one I have used and gets plenty hot. After it heats up you'll be soldering stuff in no time pin after pin. Probably only takes about 3 or 4 minutes to fully heat up.

I have owned it for a few months now and it works just as good as the day it got here, just remember tinning the tip is your friend. Anyone that says the tips go bad super fast probably did not take care of them.
