2Not recommendedOct 09, 2010
By William J. Charnigo "charniw"
I bought this light because of price and it suited my needs. After about a year of use I have had to replace the bulb twice. I have had this problem with many halogen lamps so this may not be unique to this one, however the pins for the electrical contacts on the bulbs corrode. This makes the lamp useless at this point. Now I have a commercial grade lamp in the same outdoor use installed for 15 years, so something is different.

But I recently replaced the bulb in this lamp (way up on a ladder) and this is the real issue - To change the bulb you have to remove the front glass (2 phillips screws)and hold it. This is not easy 20 feet up on a ladder trying to juggle the exchange of the old and new bulbs. I have a different light, same 500W bulb in another area. This one just has a clip (no tools!) unfasten the front glass and it is hinged so nothing can fall. I didn't realize what a difference this was until changing these in the same day. I'll be replacing all of them eventually with this type that can be serviced easier.

5good lamp at a great priceJun 16, 2011

I purchased 2 of these lamps. I shopped these lamps at lowes and home depot and was amazed at how expensive they were. Amazon was about half the price for the same style lamp and with no sales tax (since I live in TN) and free shipping it was well worth the price. The lamps really do light up our backyard well. As an electrician I can tell you from experience that if you are choosing outdoor lighting, the halogen are your best bet for short term usage. If you want to leave the lamps on for long periods of time then go with a mercury-vapor. They use less watts but don't brighten as fast as halogen. The halogen light up fast which is good if you have these on motion sensors since you want instant glare, but they use more watts and produce more heat. Never use fluorescent lamps outdoors especially in colder climates where the cold can stall the ballasts and cause the lamps to perform poorly.

3Good base, cheap lightsOct 25, 2008
By Chris
I saw these lights and was pleased by the price. I ordered four 500 watt lights and one 300 watt light. The fixture is made out of metal and is solid. I was glad to see the mounting bracket was metal also. I have purchased, and have seen many other lights that their mounting brackets were plastic. The only complaint I have is the light bulbs. Within the first four days, one bulb was burnt out. I don't have them on that long either, since 2300 watts of lights makes my electric meeter spin like a turbine aircraft engine - very fast = very expenive. I have them off my deck lighting up the trees in my back yard. Mood lighting. I probably had them on a total of 1 hour before the first one burnt out. After 2 weeks of having them installed, I had replaced ALL of the 500 watt bulbs. I have not yet had to replace the 300 watt bulb, but I have purched one to replace it already. I bought heavy duty bulbs and have not had a problem since. So, light mounts great, but cheap bulbs. Just plan on buying heavy duty bulbs at the store. In general I'm pleased with the lights. I would buy more, and then buy lights to replace the cheap ones that come with it.

5Changing the internal wiringMar 21, 2012

I needed a spot light to expose photo resists and this looked like a nice cheap option. I was worried about the thin gauge wire that another reviewer mentioned (even though I'll only be using it for maybe 5 minutes at a time) so I had decided to open it up and replace it all before using the lamp too heavily. Upon inspection it didn't look nearly as bad as the original statement led me to believe, though. With the bulb itself giving off so much heat and such little ventilation to the housing I don't know how you could say the thin gauge wire is a worrisome fire hazard. Nonetheless, I replaced the wire throughout the entire system easily within an hour. If you plan to do the same you'll want to have two replacement washers (7/16" OD, 1/8" ID) on hand to secure the wires because the stock ones are on the small size. 7/16" is just about a perfect fit although you could stand to go a tiny bit smaller depending on the kind of wire you're using to avoid grinding on the ceramic sockets or inadequate clamping force on the wires. I wouldn't go any larger. Needle nose pliers or a pair of scissors will help you remove the reflector w/o chafing the sockets much and a set of Allen keys will help realign a couple internal nuts when you get to reassembly. It's not a hard operation, but if you have any doubts concerning your DIY/wiring skills I'd say don't even worry about it. Not worth all the hassle, imo.

Overall, a nice budget floodlight I have no issues with since I'm not mounting it in a hard to reach place where changing the bulb would be cumbersome or unsafe. Recommended for the budget minded consumer who knows this floodlight's shortcomings.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THESE LIGHTS. THEY ARE BUILT VERY LIGHT AND WHEN I WAS MOUNTING THEM, THEY BOTH BROKE. THE LIGHT HOUSING IS VERY THIN POTMETAL, NOT A GOOD SOLID CAST ALUMINUM. WHEN I WAS TIGHTENING DOWN THE MOUNTING NUTS, USING VERY LIGHT PRESSURE BOTH HOUSINGS BROKE. PRETTY SAD WHEN YOU HAVE 2 BRAND NEW LIGHTS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN USED AND THEY BOTH BROKE BEFORE EVEN BEING HOOKED UP TO ELECTRICITY....
