5Not particularly difficultSep 13, 2009
By C. Mecklenborg
Like a previous reviewer, my husband and I also live in Texas (Austin as well, in fact) and decided to install window films in our new house. We've had record heat this year, so it seemed like a wise investment. Enter Gila.

I actually did the first two windows by myself and didn't have too much of a problem. I ended up with one barely-noticeable crease in the first from not being careful enough about peeling off the backing, but otherwise didn't have too much trouble. It was easier, however, doing the remaining windows with two people. The windows look fantastic, nearly professional grade, and certainly nothing like the horrid window tinting that people throw up in old clunker cars.

Tips:
1) Read the instructions.
2) Clean your windows obsessively before starting.
3) Cut the film ~1 inch larger on each side.
4) Peel the backing off VERY slowly and carefully.
5) Spray the window and both sides of the film liberally with a soap & water solution. You can use the stuff in the application kit for this or just mix up some baby shampoo or dish soap with water. There's no such thing as too much of the stuff sprayed on your windows (as long as you clean up the windowsills afterward), but you WILL have trouble if you spray too little!
6) Squeegee all the bubbles out, working from the center outward.
7) Use a razor blade to trim the edges only after you've squeegeed all of the liquid out from between the window & the film. If you leave much, the film may slip while you're trimming.

And that should do it. If you end up with any micro-bubbles in the film, they should disappear within a couple of days.

5great filmJul 04, 2010
By FarNorthGamer
I installed this film on my patio door last summer to cut down on the heat being transferred from the concrete pad, worked like a charm. Did the same for my son's room and guest room, huge difference. Went ahead and did the rest of my house this spring, and again, same results, works very, very well.

Things you WILL need to do

1) Suck it up and get an install kit or at a minimum the plastic blade. It will save time and hassle.
2) Clean your window well, and use a razor to scrape any excess dirt/paint off the window to prevent bubbling. Then clean it again. Same process used by a buddy of mine, who is a professional tint man for auto and home.
3) Have a helper. When it comes time to peell the backing off the film, this will be a lifesaver.
4) No such thing as getting the film too wet. Spray the heck out of it and your window when installing. All excess can be squeeged out. Don't forget to spray it a bit once it's mounted to help the squeege blade slide over the film.

5read the directions 3 times....Jun 10, 2011

This product is quite ez to install once you understand the importance of the solution sprayed on the window and the film. The solution is 90% to make this job as ez as possible, The solution prevents the adhesive from adhering to anything including the window until you are ready. As many have said clean the window twice to remove any contaminants/debris on the surface. If there is debris it will show very badly after the film is applied. As stated cut the film about 1/2 to 3/4 more than you need for the window size. On the first windows this will be helpful as you gain experience. To remove the liner apply a piece of tape to the corner front and back and pull the pieces opposite and the liner will come away from the film. Lay the film so liner is on top and where the corner is exposed spray solution on the adhesive side (facing up) gently pull back on the liner and spray more exposed adhesive area. Advance the liner little more and spray again. This is easiest if someone can do the liner and you can hold the tint film down and spray as the liner is removed. wet the entire adhesive side well then spray the entire window surface completely. Now and only now are you ready to apply the film. Since both surfaces are wet the adhesive will not stick so place the film to the window and center it. Take the solution and lightly spray the film so you can use the squeege effectively. Once you do a couple of pieces you can see how ez it is but very important to keep all surfaces especially the adhesive and any surface that comes in contact with the adhesive wet. I have noticed a huge difference with the reduction in heat and sun glare. Great product.

5Great investmentMay 06, 2008

I bought and installed this window film, and while it is a two person job and it can be a bit difficult, I found it to be a great investment. I live in Texas and applied it to my sliding patio doors and it has made a great difference. I totally disagree with the other reviewer. It is like looking through sun glasses and cuts down on solar heat tremendously. I am going to do the rest of my windows with this product.

5Not as hard to apply as others sayMay 28, 2011

The secret to applying this film is lubricate, lubricate, lubricate. Wet your hands, window and the film profusely and you shouldn't have any problems. I've used this product several times over the years. Most recently, I started doing a window and forgot to wet the film BEFORE removing the backing. Yes, I said before removing the backing, This will make the application soooo much easier. You will thank me later. By wetting the film beforehand, you will prevent the film from sticking to itself and causing the dreaded creases. It's nearly impossible to undo this stuff once it sticks to itself. Just keep everything super wet and you should have no problems.
