It's expensive, but you don't need to use much.

The directions on the bottle are a bit confusing. Cut the suckers to about six inches high, then spray sparingly (be sure to shake first). No need to saturate the leaves. After a few weeks you'll probably have to go back and get the suckers that you missed the first time around. On one tree I had already cut the suckers to the ground, so I sprayed the stubs. It still worked great!

I have used this product on ornamental pear and cherry with excellent results. This is the first season that I've tried it. We'll see what happens next year. I'll try to report back.

2010 update - Used the product several times last year for mid-season touch ups. Sure beats pulling and cutting by hand. I got the usual crop of spring suckers, although less than years past. Hit them with the product a few days ago and they are already withering. Still have half a bottle left. Highly recommended product.

Generally works well, but does need a second application for some sprouts. Only downside is that the sprayer clogs after each use requiring soaking in warm water. Some improvement when the sprayer is flushed out after each use. Have found nothing better that does not do damage to the tree.

If you like to garden as I do, you have probably nicked roots of trees and shrubs while planting under them, and now have shoots coming up. This will kill those suckers without harming the parent tree. Other weed killers could end up killing the parent plant. The only down side is that it has to be repeated the next year, but that is better than losing the crape myrtle or winterberry I have spent 10 years growing. This stays in my gardening arsenal.

After setting aside an afternoon to use my brand new bottle of sucker stopper, I found it won't come out of the bottle no matter what I do. It doesn't spray or stream (the two options on the nozzle). I opened the top (a bit of a challenge given the configuration and the tight fit) and there was no seal that needed to be broken. And no one here on Amazon) has mentioned having trouble getting started, although one user mentioned his applicator clogging after each use. I haven't used mine yet!

There's also nothing on the bottle, the attached pamplet or the Monterey website that addresses any potential problems with getting this product out of the bottle and onto your suckers.

So, just a warning - it might not work when you get it. I'll update this review when I hear back from the manufacturer (Monterey).

Update 2 August 2011
I contacted Monterey Garden and they promptly sent me not one, but two, new spray attachments. Great! However, neither one gave me a "spray" - more like a dribble, but at least some came out and I was able to treat my suckers. They have died back well and no new ones yet (after nearly 2 months).

So, the product seems effective; if only they'd fix the sprayer problem. If you find something else that works on suckers, it might be a better bet.
