2So much safer to set - so 2* - but for the rats too!Jan 10, 2006
By Honest Opinion - hacker.
I would love to give this trap a 5* rating because setting it is soooo much safer than the Victor brand traditional traps. The design looks and feels like "a better rat trap" but has the one drawback that I get a lot more sprung traps without any victim than I do with the Victor traps. By the way I have no affiliation with Victor at all. I just like to kill rats. Talking of Victor, they make two types (that I know of) - a traditional one with a small metal bait holder, which scares the Sh*t out of me when I set them, but is as good as it gets w.r.t. dead vermin. They newer and safer ones have a large yellow paddle which is easier to set (nothing like as easy as the Big Snap-E trap though) and are still effective. The older type still has the 'hairier' trigger though...

Bait - I've used dried apricots, peanut butter and gummiworms all to good effect. I'm told fruit gums work well, but my local store only had worms. Didn't make much difference to the momentarily happy rat I caught last week. ;-) Cheese is quite poor.

I also had one of the Big-E traps break - in the 'trip' mechanism. I have to confess I didn't bother to find out how their customer service is - it's a $5 trap after all - but it's a shame it broke.

'Hope you kill lots of rats.

5best rat trapAug 23, 2009
By William C. Milo "Bill Milo"
I have a lot of fruit trees. As a result I attract a lot of possums and rats. I have over 50 rap traps of different designs around my property and in my garage and attic. This trap is the best because,
1. made of a good plastic and the bugs and fungus don't eat it up like the wood ones
do when used outdoors
2. easy to set and remove the rat
3. It catches rats
4. it is well made and is reliable not like a Victor of the same design
5. There is another design that snaps like an alligator but doesn't work to well and breaks easy.

I catch as many as 35 to 40 rats in a typical year. I tie a brick onto the trap so bigger animals and possums don't get into them and walk off with my trap. This happened a few times before I started using bricks.

5can even trap invertedFeb 02, 2010
By L. Scott Collins "Finally getting rest"
I researched and purchased these traps after seeing them used by an expensive animal control company to deal with a flying squirrel problem in the eaves of a cabin. I live a mere mile from the national park boundary of the Great Smoky Mountain nat.park in a log cabin. We get animal visitors and invasions ranging from squirrels & raccoons to grown black bears and coyotes coming right up on the back deck. The particular challenge was removing a large colony of southern flying squirrels which previously unknown to me are incredibly fast and agile as well as the amazing ability to run up walls and upside down across ceilings with no regard to gravity. These animals had nested deep in the roof structure and were keeping my family up at night with noisy squeaking and loud nocturnal scampering that was especially loud in back bedrooms only feet above beds. Upon locating the entry and exit holes that were soffet/eave vents on the underside of a roof, the problem arose of how to get a conventional trap close enough to attract and do the job without other animals getting caught by mistake. Enter the Snap-E rat trap. These small squirrels are not much bigger then a large rat. I was pleased to see that the manufacturer designed mounting holes so that these traps can be mounted upside down in areas that only this species of squirrel could reach. The bait tray is an enclosed well that holds the bait independent of the trigger mechanism protecting the sides of the bait preventing nibbling or snatching to steal the bait. The trigger mechanism is well designed to cover the entire kill zone so that the animal cannot use the trap itself as a platform to get close to the bait for stealing. The best feature is the spring design in its raw strength and speed. The right angle design allows the striking bar to travel half the distance as a traditional victor type trap drastically shortening the reflex time an animal would have to get clear. The second advantage to the spring/strike bar design is the ability to lift the striker without getting near or touching the kill zone of the trap in the case of stray blood or tissue reducing risk of infection. Being that Flying Squirrels are heavy carriers of typhus it was very important to release the trap without touching the carcass. These traps are simply better designed and industrial in nature making the superior product in this area.
As they have said since the black plague, build a better mouse trap and the world will beat a path to your door.

5Oh Yes It Does Get The BIG Ones!!Oct 30, 2009

I have to disagree with the person who said that these traps are not for the big rats. I kept putting two of these in the backyard at night but had to keep putting them up on the jacuzzi every time my dogs had to pee at 1:30am and other various times during early morning hours. That got to be very tiresome so I eventually just left them on the jacuzzi and forgot about them. Well, they had been rained on and the peanut butter/poison combo had long since become crusty and sun dried but sure enough I awoke one Monday morning to find what I thought was one of our many large stuffed doggie toys laying across the top of the jacuzzi cover. Only to find that it was an extremely large rat (think small cat size) with his head stuck nice and tight inside the trap. The ants were already feasting on the eyes and brain, it was GROSS (but kinda cool)!! These traps are worth every penny!!! Being female, I wasn't thrilled about having to get the rat out of the trap but it really was easy as pie. Just have an open bag on the ground and open the trap and down he goes. You never have to touch the rat at all!! Like another reviewer said they can and sometimes do run off with the traps so definately tie them down to something heavy. My guy tried to run but luckily the trap snagged a small hole in the tarp on top of the hot tub cover and ripped it wide open. Who knows how far he would have gotten if the trap hadn't been tangled up in pieces of tarp. We still don't know how he got up there but we have since built a ramp for all of his relatives and friends so they can sample our fine cuisine as well. Good Luck Everyone, Happy Killing!!!

5Great trap--it works!Oct 26, 2010
By Bulldog "Meg"
We were invaded by rodents as the cold weather approached. I had bought the expensive electronic traps when we had visitors in the spring and they worked then. For some reason, during this invasion, they hardly ever triggered and they stole the bait cups. So I ordered these along with another brand on Amazon to try as they were cheaper than the electronic ones. The other kind has yet to catch a thing. These are working, really, really working. Like bait with peanut butter, set it, leave it; and collect mouse within 12 hours. Rarely, the trap will be triggered without a catch, but most of the time, it works. Simple to set, and a reasonable size. When it kills, it kills them dead. I still set the electronic traps, but rarely are they catching one. I have two of these, and when I hear noise; I am getting a kill. I think I am thinning out the population now, so am catching only an occasional one. But they work! I got one of the smaller ones of these and it triggers, but has only caught one. These are large and fsst enough to get the job done. Mouse is easy to remove. Trap is easy to clean.

Well fed cat is of no help.
