5Excellent tape to keep around the houseJan 11, 2011
By Matthew Becker
I was surprised by the lack of information about the tape on Amazon's listing. For more information about the tape than you care to know, search for "3m 4011 datasheet" - 3M has one that talks about it's construction, adhesive tests, and bondline elongation results among other things. As far as load goes, the packaging recommends 4 inches of tape for every pound it's supposed to hold and can be used to mount up to a total of 5 pounds. The packaging also warns that the tape "may cause damage if removed" and "if you must remove the mounted object, insert a knife behind [it] and carefully cut the tape between the adhesive surfaces".

The tape is 0.045 inches thick (almost 1 mm), so depending on what you use it for, there may be a bulge. It is kind of a pain to remove the red protective layer, so if you need to fit it in a tight spot, peel of a corner first before placing it.

I've used this tape a few times and have been very pleased with it. I've used to attach a Oxo SteeL Kitchen Tool and Utensil Rack to a metal backsplash (where I couldn't screw into it) and I've also used it to mount surge protectors to the underside of desks to move it out of the way. I'm sure there are hundreds of other good uses for it, so I plan to keep a roll of it around the house. It's almost as useful as super glue, just less permanent and it isn't as much of a pain to clean up.

UPDATE (7/13/2011): I've been using this to mount the tool rack for over six months now. It does work, however the load I'm putting on it is too high and it causes the tape to creep. After about 3-4 weeks it sags enough to drop the untensils. I'm not going to dock a star because I knew I'm exceeding the load (I have several pounds on a square inch.).

I've recently discovered 3M's 4929 Very High Bond Tape. This stuff is ridiculously strong (110 psi shear). I've used it at work in high stress environments at low temperatures (-20C) and it didn't budge. This tape is (currently) not on Amazon and has to be ordered through an industrial supply company like McMaster-Carr ($20 a roll). I think I'm going to try replacing the 3M 4011 tape with this and see if it does any better.

5Great alternative to mounting things with hardware!Feb 03, 2010
By Susannah Medley
I use this instead of screws when holding lightweight to medium weight items. Saves time, and saves holes in the material. Can be removed with a scraper, a pliers and some patience. (To remove, start at a corner, grab it with the pliers and gradually pull it up)

I bought this to mount an address plate to the stone front of my house. It holds extremely well and has withstood cold temps, snow and rain. Despite the tape thickness, the surface still has to be relatively flat after the tape is applied for the object that is being attached to adhere solidly.

5Just what we neededMar 06, 2011
By RainyDay
We have a glass enclosure for our shower that's about 16 years old. The interior handle fell off, the foam tape that held it wasn't sticky anymore. I went to (Big Orange Home Improvement Store) but couldn't find something to replace it with. I found this exterior mounting tape and once we got it my husband reattached the handle easily with it. He tugged on it pretty hard, and the tape held. I'm glad I found this exterior tape, so the water won't diminish its ability to hold. Now I have the rest of the roll to use for whatever project we might need it for.

5Fantastic Product - buy bigger roll thoughDec 10, 2011
By Soar
Here is a re-post of my review for the same product but for 450" roll instead of this 60" roll. I recommend the 450" roll because at the current price, the 450" roll is 3 times the price of this 60" roll and you get 7.5 times the length of material. A much better value, and if you like it as much as I do... YOU WILL WANT IT.

Scotch Permanent Outdoor Mounting Tape, 1 Inch x 450 Inches (4011-LONG)

I call this sticky tape stuff because when I started using it, I found it to be less a double-sided mounting tape and more like a thin sheet of sticky gum. This stuff stretches out to much longer and narrower or can be folded upon itself to be thicker. Sticky stuff.

Value:
This 450 inch roll is the much better value than the 60 inch roll on the site (4 cents per inch versus 10 cents per inch).

Does it work:
I haven't found any type of mounting or double sided tape that comes anywhere near this in sticking ability. I use this in my garage to mount some padded rubber surfaces (very light) to a cinder block wall to protect my car doors, through extreme heat and cold, the surface has stuck. I use this to mount a plastic device that attaches hoses to a window (for an in-room AC unit) which gets a significant amount of torque from the heavy hoses, absolutely no issue. So, yes, it works.

That's it... if you are a do-it-yourself'er, this is a must have for your tool kit.
